The Basics

Founded in 2014 in the Orlando suburb of St. Cloud, Florida, by former Major League Baseball right fielder, Darryl Strawberry and his wife, Tracy, the Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center provides substance abuse treatment for men and women. In 2015, the Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center opened another facility about 60 miles north, in Deland, Florida. Strawberry, who is famous for leading both the Mets and the Yankees to several world championships, had his own personal and highly-publicized struggle with addiction. He met Tracy at a rehab center, and both have long-term recovery and are ordained ministers. The Strawberrys also have a website, Strawberry Ministries, which features all of their accomplishments over the past decade.

Accommodations and Food  

The Darryl Strawberry Center accommodates 75 clients in its St. Cloud facility, and 33 clients at the Deland location. Clients are housed in gender-specific areas and paired in comfortably furnished rooms, though some private rooms are available. A typical single includes a twin bed with a wooden headboard and wooden base that includes drawers, a small nightstand, desk, chair and lamp. Light colored walls and large windows provide a sense of spaciousness.

Clients are served three meals a day in a dining room. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated and vegetarian options are offered. Amenities include common areas with Cable TV, board games, basketball courts, washers and dryers and access to on-site gyms. The Deland facility is home to Bruce, a resident peacock who likes to strut around the premises, showing off his plumage. Smoking is allowed outdoors in designated areas.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admission, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment with a staff, and receive individualized treatment plans. The Deland facility provides detox, which includes the option for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and around the clock monitoring by a nursing staff and physicians. Length of detox is usually between five and seven days. Those requiring medication for co-occurring disorders are provided with psychiatric evaluations, as well as medication management.

At the Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center, a 12-step approach and evidence-based modalities are incorporated into the program. Treatment length is 28 days, and includes weekly individual therapy, daily group therapy, dietary planning and attendance at 12-step meetings off the premises. Group topics include spirituality, relationship issues, family conflict, behavioral issues, substance addiction, the 12 steps, relapse prevention and processing. Clients are also expected to work on their steps while in treatment.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets for three hour groups during the day, or at night, Mondays through Fridays. Treatment length is between four and six weeks. The program parallels the inpatient track, yet is less time intensive. Additionally, IOP clients receive life-coaching sessions.

The teams at the Strawberry Center locations include CADCs, physicians, psychiatrists, licensed therapists, and nurses. The staff to client ratio is one to six.

Extras

Aftercare is provided, and can include group and individual therapy. This is scheduled per client’s needs.

The Darryl Strawberry Center provides specialized program to help athletes and veterans suffering from chemical dependency. Additionally, the Strawberrys spend time visiting incarcerated men and women, and run a non-profit organization, the Darryl Strawberry Foundation, to help autistic children.
