Chiang Mai ThailandThe Basics

Addiction Rehab Center (ARC) Thailand began operation in February 2016 when founder and owner, Mike, retired to Chiang Mai after working in the substance abuse treatment field for 30 years in the UK. ARC provides inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment based on 12-step principles as well as detox, to those 18 and over.

Accommodations and Food

ARC takes a maximum of 12 clients at a time and houses them in 14 villas. The villas are typically gender-specific, with both single and double occupancy rooms available. Clients are arranged depending on need and how ARC staff deems suitable. Bedrooms have twin or full beds and en suite bathrooms. ARC facilities have disabled accessibility and include a TV lounge, dining room and communal outdoor space with smoking areas and an on-site pool. Detox clients stay locally at a hospital under doctor’s supervision and attend treatment at the ARC facility. All meals are prepared on-site and included in the price of stay. Plenty of dietary options are available for each meal.

Treatment and Staff

A stay at ARC may last one to three months. If clients feel like they need more time, additional arrangements can be made to extend their stay. Clients at ARC spend every day having CBT-based individual sessions with their assigned counselor and taking part in group therapy twice a day. The daily routine features a guided meditation session at eight am, with the clients having free time in the afternoons to swim or work out or take in a lecture. Their schedules also include excursions and written assignments.

Group is also held on Saturday mornings, followed by work time after to complete assignments. AA/NA meetings are available on-site weekdays and Saturday evenings while Sunday is reserved for excursions, like visiting a local temple. Excursions are paid extra out of clients’ pockets, and require approval from ARC staff. Ward the end of each person’s stay, there is a shift toward relapse prevention. For those who live locally or close to stay in Thailand, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is available as a step down option. IOP entails attendance at three groups a week.

ARC employs a number of licensed counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists, medical professionals, mindfulness coaches, nutritionists, financial case managers and recovery coaches. Support for co-occurring disorders is available in the form of specialized groups and medication management.

Extras

ARC aftercare offers ongoing therapy, either with an ARC staff member, over Skype, or by recommending trained professionals in the area clients live, post-treatment. Aftercare clients may be referred to participate in 12-step meetings, or be guided in new hobbies, as well as charity and volunteer work.

In Summary

At about nine months of operation, Addiction Rehab Center (ARC) Thailand is relatively new. However, its founder brings years of experience to the operation. ARC’s treatment is on par any other residential treatment facility, in a beautiful setting that offers an exotic, lush natural landscape and an extremely low cost. In fact, for those interested, it may be more economical and possibly even more effective to pay for ARC and the cost of airfare to Thailand than to get treated locally.
