The Basics
Founded in 1980 in Rochester, Hope Haven is a residential treatment program for substance abuse. As a division of Rochester Regional Health, the program is housed at United Memorial Medical Center (UMMC) in Batavia, New York and is fully licensed by the State Office for Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).
Accommodations and Food
Located on a secure floor of UMMC’s Jerome Center, the medical unit has a total of 20 beds. Residents share a room with another client; each equipped with twin beds, closet space and fresh linens. Common areas include a sitting area for casual meetings and the kitchen, which is stocked with fresh and frozen breakfast foods that residents are expected to prepare for themselves in the morning. Lunch and dinner are provided by the on-staff chef who serves hot meals off of a set menu; however, most dietary needs and restrictions can be accommodated. The kitchen also has snack foods available throughout the day. Clients are allowed to have sugar while in treatment but not caffeine.
Cell phones and laptops are not permitted.
Treatment and staff
After the initial intake process, counselors work with clients to develop a treatment plan best suited to their needs. Clients in need of detox are referred to a stabilization unit.
Although duration and intensity of each program may vary, the average stay is 28 days and treatment is a combination of group and individual therapy that uses evidence-based practices, such as CBT, as well as 12-step integration if requested. Family therapy can also be added upon request. Groups meet two to four times a day and address spirituality, relapse prevention, life skills, anger and stress management, educational topics and peer sharing. For clients with a dual diagnosis, additional psychiatric support is available.
Hope Haven hosts regular 12-step meetings on-site but attendance is only encouraged, not required.
Staff consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, MDs, RNs, CASACs, LSWs and other Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
While Hope Haven does not have an official aftercare program, referral can be made for stepped down outpatient treatment after primary care has been completed.
In Summary
In all, Hope Haven is a comprehensive, co-ed residential treatment program for substance abuse. Using a combination of evidence-based practices, addiction-related group discussions, peer support and 12-step-focused therapy (upon request), clients are given the tools necessary to build a strong foundation for long-term recovery. While the hospital-like setting may not appeal to everyone, its highly trained staff and access to all the services of UMMC makes Hope Haven a solid choice for residential treatment in the Rochester area.
