With four distinct locations, serving Crook, Johnson, Sheridan and Weston counties respectively, Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center offers outpatient based substance abuse treatment with a strong dual diagnosis component. The facility has branches in the cities of Buffalo, Sundance, Newcastle and Sheridan, with the latter serving as the primary location.

Treatment and Staff

Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center does not offer detox services though clients in need of it can be referred to a nearby accommodating facility. The most comprehensive offering at the facility is its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which consists of nine hours per week of group therapy, broken down into three groups per week, each a three-hour session. Clients also have access to individual therapy, typically once a month, though they can schedule more frequent sessions as needed. All sessions are CBT-oriented with an emphasis on Motivational Interviewing (MI) and clients are introduced to core concepts of 12-step recovery. Typically, clients spend 12 weeks in the IOP before dropping down to a standard outpatient program, which consists of two, two-hour group sessions a week, with monthly individual sessions (again, with the ability to schedule more frequent individual sessions). Following this phase, which is also typically 12 weeks, clients begin a continuing care program which also doubles as Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center’s aftercare program, consisting of one group session per week for ten weeks or as long as needed.

The staff at Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center has a diverse range of credentials, including LADCs, LCSWs and LACs. Given its name, it’s unsurprising that the facility also offers a program to address co-occurring disorders. There is a psychiatric nurse on staff who assists with medication management as well access to a visiting psychiatrist.

Furthermore, clients who come to the Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center’s doors seeking a specific program to address a court infraction for DWI or MIP can also take advantage of its consultation and education classes for these issues.

Extras

At each of its locations, Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center serves as a community-oriented facility and offer much more than just outpatient services for substance abuse or mental health. Thus, marriage and family therapy programs are offered, a self-esteem building program for children and services for the elderly as well as geriatric consultation.

In Summary

Given the rural nature of the communities it serves, Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center is a valuable resource for clients based in Crook, Johnson, Sheridan and Weston counties. Clients seeking substance abuse treatment can count on an IOP with a dual diagnosis component that offers a modern and disciplined approach to treatment. Clients can also count on aftercare, an introduction to AA/NA and being part of a community-oriented organization that assists clients in all walks of life.
