The Basics

Located in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Prairie Counseling Services offers outpatient treatment for addiction and psychological issues. Founded in 1977, the facility has helped its community with a wide-range of issues—from suicide prevention to stress management— for over 35 years. In addition to substance abuse recovery, Prairie Counseling Services is also a Chapter 20-approved provider for court-ordered OWI programs.

Treatment and Staff

After an initial intake and assessment, counselors develop an individualized treatment plan for each client, comprised of individual and group therapy that is rooted in evidence-based practices. Additional support for some co-occurring disorders—such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders—is also available. Group topics include the disease concept of addiction, introduction to the 12 Steps, stress management, compulsive behavior, suicide prevention and family-related topics. While outside AA/NA attendance is not always required, the facility does offer discussion groups for Adult Children of Alcoholics and other 12-step-based issues.

Staff consists of state-certified substance abuse counselors, MFTs, psychologists and Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Once primary care for addiction is completed, clients may join Prairie Counseling’s aftercare group. 

As mentioned, the facility is a Chapter 20-approved provider for court-ordered OWI programs, which along with general counseling for non-addiction related mental and behavioral health issues is offered as a standalone service.

In Summary

Overall, Prairie Counseling Services offers intimate and individually-focused treatment for addiction and some co-occurring disorders. While less clinical than hospital-based programs, the facility is a good match for people looking for less intensive care with a staff who are well-versed on a range of issues.
