The Basics
The Riegel Center is part of Penrose Saint Francis Healthcare in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Centura Health Network throughout Colorado. Riegel has provided outpatient substance abuse treatment in the Colorado Springs community for more than 25 years. It offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), with treatment sessions scheduled only in the evenings.
Treatment and Staff
While those at Riegel do not have to commit to a fixed number of counseling sessions, the staff can make recommendations about how much therapy time is needed. Generally, treatment at Riegel is about six months, though stays range more generally from three to nine months. The program is limited to 12 clients at a time and usually operates at capacity. When applying, Riegel asks for personal information including a substance abuse and treatment history, and for a physical, emotional and mental health exam.
Private counseling sessions last a half hour to an hour whereas group sessions generally last two to three hours. Personal responsibility, problem-solving, relapse prevention, anxiety, depression and relationships are all discussed. Participants are encouraged to share their insights on how to manage sobriety. Although the program is not 12-step affiliated, clients are also encouraged to attend off-site AA meetings. Smoking is permitted outside the building, though smoking cessation is also a part of the program.
Release from Riegel can occur any time as mutually-agreed upon by the staff and client, with consultation and input from any outside agencies (such as the criminal justice system or a former residential program) when applicable. Similarly, random drug testing can be conducted requested through referral. The staff at Riegel is comprised of CADCs with a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-four.
Extras
If relapse occurs during treatment, intervention is possible through the Psychiatric Emergency Triage Team and the Penrose Saint Francis Emergency Department, open 24 hours a day all week. Riegel offers a wide range of community resources and referrals for education and employment as well.
In Summary
Riegel offers an outpatient program that is evening-only and usually keeps its small program full. As part of a larger health services network it has access to many treatment options and healthcare professionals. As clients are are not obligated to a certain amount of therapy, Riegel center presents an affordable, flexible program with plenty of one-on-one care.
