Huntington Beach CaliforniaThe Basics

ARC Recovery is a sober living for men in Huntington Beach, California. Founded in 2015 by “Captain” Alex Rivett-Carnac, who is originally from Stonehenge, England, ARC Recovery implements sailing as a valuable recovery tool. Rivett-Carnac who is sober, is a UK and US yacht master and a professional sailor. He believes that sailing parallels recovery. By steering a boat, clients learn to deal with the forces of nature, which are often beyond their power. They learn how to steer, gain momentum and stay focused, despite obstacles presented by air, water and other natural occurrences.

Accommodations and Amenities

ARC Recovery includes a spacious ranch-style residence and a large split-level house. Each house has four bedrooms, three bathrooms and accommodates six clients per home. Clients are typically paired in double-occupancy rooms, which include flat screen TVs with Direct TV, twin or full-sized beds, nightstands, dressers and lamps. Single rooms are available for an additional charge. The houses have nautical themes, as evident by hanging artwork depicting sailboats, fish plaques, sailboat models and a bronze metallic globe on a wooden stand. Luxurious leather couches and contemporary coffee tables furnish the living rooms.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in expansive, fully equipped kitchens that have state-of-the-art appliances. Amenities include a hot tub, laundry, ample parking, Wi-Fi and cable. House managers live on the premises in both homes.

Rules and Regulations

At ARC Recovery, clients usually have between 60 and 90 days of verified sobriety. Applicants with a minimum of 30 days may also meet qualifications. Some clients are referred by the nearby residential treatment center, Hotel California by the Sea.

Clients must attend between three and five weekly recovery support group meetings. This includes 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery and any other recovery protocol that suits the client’s needs. Rivett-Carnac does not believe one size fits all. He and his staff treat clients as individuals. Attendance slips must be signed by the meeting’s secretary to show proof of participation.

Men are expected to go to meetings, volunteer, work or go to school. Attending an outpatient program is also a viable option. Performance of weekly chores is mandated. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight or one am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

Every other weekend, Rivett-Carnac takes clients sailing from Newport Beach. Often their sea excursions include whale watching.

In Summary

Rivett-Carnac and his staff are keen on treating clients as individuals, and work with them on a personal level, to ensure that they are taking the right steps that are appropriate for their journey through recovery. With Captain Rivett-Carnac at the helm, clients also have the added bonus of learning the ropes of sailing. Not only do they get a chance to learn how to navigate a sailboat, they are in an environment where just being on the ocean is nothing short of an exhilarating and spiritual experience. ARC Recovery does not like to disclose their address, for the safety and privacy of clients.
