The Basics
Meridian Healthcare was founded in 1972 to aid residents of northeastern Ohio in the throes of addiction. It currently operates several residential treatment facilities for men, women, veterans and the homeless. Meridian created the first programs for co-occurring disorders in Ohio and took over the Donofrio Recovery Centers network in 2007.
Meridian’s Youngstown North Campus has an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which can include Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for those suffering from opioid addiction. It also offers one-on-one counseling for co-occurring disorders at its South Campus (also in Youngstown) and an additional MAT dosing clinic in Warren, Ohio.
Treatment and Staff
Clients make an initial commitment of 24 treatment sessions upon entering the IOP. Clients are required to attend group therapy three times each week and usually complete their treatment plan in eight weeks, as long as they attend all sessions and maintain clean drug screenings. Clients also have individual therapy once a week and are asked to attend at least three 12-step meetings each week.
Meridian’s comprehensive treatment team includes addictionologists, LPCs, LISWs and CDACs. Therapy uses CBT, DBT and trauma-informed care. Meridian has a dedicated track for those suffering from co-occurring disorders. Clients needing significant dual diagnosis support meet with specially trained therapists and may be connected to other community agencies for help with their mental health diagnosis.
Clients addicted to opiates can receive MAT with Suboxone or methdaone. Suboxone clients must also attend all IOP group and individual therapy. Methadone clients work with the clinical team to create a phase-plan for their treatment.
Extras
Meridian’s IOP has recently begun hosting a family group on Fridays. For aftercare, clients can attend 12 sessions of a weekly relapse prevention group.
In Summary
Meridian Healthcare has been providing residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment for over four decades and was a pioneer in the development of dual diagnosis support in Ohio. With a comprehensive treatment team that includes therapists, counselors and physicians, Meridian Healthcare might be an especially strong option for those whose physical and mental health struggles impact their addiction.
