The Basics

Rutgers University Graduate School for Applied and Professional Psychology offers several programs for the treatment of mental health disorders. Located in Piscataway, New Jersey, the Program for Addictions Consultation and Treatment (PACT) was the result of a collaboration between St. Peter’s University Hospital and Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies in 1984. Eventually, the program was moved to the Psychological Center in 1999 and has been treating adults and adolescents on an outpatient basis since. Treatment and assistance for individuals with DUI charges is also available.

Treatment and Staff

PACT provides an individualized treatment track that is specifically tailored to the client. There is no minimum duration for program completion or cookie-cutter approach to the treatment. Prior to admission, clients are screened with a bio-psycho-social assessment which ensures that outpatient treatment is the best option, as PACT services do not include detox or inpatient treatment. Clients in need of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) or more intensive treatment are referred out to trusted facilities in the area. Dual diagnosis support is available if the client has mental health concerns discovered during the assessment process.

During agreed upon treatment days, clients attend a variety of services—group therapy being the primary method of treatment. In addition to groups, individual therapy and family or couple’s therapy may be included in the treatment plan. Frequency of attendance and the exact process is dependent on the client and their needs. In order to supplement recovery, the facility acts as host to SMART Recovery groups as well as 12-step meetings. Clients are strongly encouraged to attend these meetings to create a sense of community and recovery.

Staff is made up of clinical psychologists who are currently in training and use evidence-based methods of treatment including CBT. The 12-step framework, principles and values are also incorporated into treatment. All of the trainees are overseen by the program director, Frederick Rotgers (PsyD).

Extras

The PACT track also includes assistance for individuals who have been referred by probation departments and court programs. DUI counseling can help reduce recidivism rates and prevent future occurrences.

In Summary

Rutgers University PACT offers adults and adolescents the opportunity to recover in an individualized program model. All clients are seen by psychology graduate students who are finalizing their requirements for full certification. Clients have the option to attend group, individual, family and couple’s therapy as well as on-site SMART Recovery and 12-step meetings. With a solid program that incorporates evidence-based treatment, PACT is a reliable recovery community and support network.
