Straightening the ReinsThe Basics

Located about 20 miles north of Los Angeles in the foothills of California’s Santa Clarita Valley, SRD Straightening Reins specializes in equine-assisted and interactive therapies to address substance abuse, behavioral and emotional problems. Its mission is to offer guidance, encouragement and a safe space for adolescents to recover and spend time together.

Treatment and Staff

SRD uses Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), individualgroup and family therapy. Clients attend individual therapy weekly, for anywhere from six to 12 months. Each individual session runs for an hour. The EAP sessions are 90 minutes and part of a structured program for each age group.

SRD takes an evidence-based, clinical approach, which it deems effective for addressing the issues resulting from self-medicating or self-harming. Most of the clients come from a residential program, are referred by a therapist or learn about the program through SRD’s workshops. The program is not set up to facilitate detox, so clients in need of that service must be have already completed a detox program when they begin treatment. Also, the program does not currently offer dual diagnosis support, but can provide referrals if necessary.

SRD has seven staff members and ratios depend on the specific workshop, session or group topic. Programs are run by MFTs, LCSWs and an equine specialist.

Extras

SRD offers a variety of supplementary programs for adolescents, caregivers and individuals with special needs.

The first and third Sunday of each month have a variety of programming including the Teen Issues workshop, Special Kids workshop and Sibshop. Teen Issues workshop explores issues such as peer pressure, stress, bullying, building self‒esteem and coping skills. Special Kids Workshop is dedicated to children with special needs coming together and learning social skills and communication through equine-based activities. It is $60 dollars per child and includes four sessions. Sibshop is for kids to connect with others who have siblings with special needs. In this workshop, siblings become empowered with information, coping strategies and support.

In addition, there is the Caregivers Workshop, which is for caregivers to reconnect and establish their own self-care. Individuals work along Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) certified health professionals, equine specialists and SRD’s horses.

Peopled aged eight to 18 are welcome to volunteer at SRD’s ranch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from four pm to six pm, and on Saturdays from nine am to noon.

In Summary

SRD Straightening the Reins is unique from other programs because it strives to offer services for adolescents before the self‒medicating starts. Regular ranch hours, a supervised environment, barn animals to interact with and a no electronics policy all make this facility very conducive to healing. The additional programs for teens, caregivers, individuals with special needs and individuals who have families with special needs are added bonuses. This is definitely a holistic program that focuses on being proactive while also giving counseling to those who are struggling with addictions and their families.
