R houseThe Basics

R House is an inpatient and outpatient treatment facility for teens with co-occurring disorders in Santa Rosa, California. Focused on adolescents and families in need of dual diagnosis support, R House has provided residential and charter school services to surrounding communities for over 40 years.

Primarily working with the juvenile justice system and social services to provide treatment for teens coping with substance abuse, the organization specializes in treating young people who have been through the foster system and who have a history of abuse and childhood neglect. Located on the grounds of the Abraxis charter school, clients and families use this one-stop treatment facility for education and substance abuse treatment.

Accommodations and Food

R House has two charter school campuses—one for local students in the outpatient program and the other for residents of the program. The housing quarters are dorm-style housing on the same grounds as the charter school. R House accommodates a maximum of 30 residents, with 18 boys and 12 girls separated into gender-specific wings. Residential treatment varies from 30 days to 90 days and is typically for individuals transferring out of juvenile services.

The boy’s wing is divided into six bedrooms with three beds in each room. Each room has one twin bed and a bunk bed, a dresser for clothes and a shared closet. The girl’s wing has four bedrooms sleeping three in each room with one bunk bed and one single. For every three bedrooms, a bathroom is available with shower and bathroom storage. Bed linens and towels are provided and maintained by the maintenance staff. Staff are on-site at all hours to monitor the residents and provide support when needed.

Some R House classrooms offer TV for educational purposes or inspirational programming. The grounds have a basketball court and plenty of space for exercise and recreation. All meals are served in a cafeteria setting and are nutritionally balanced. Vending machines are available for clients to get snacks during the daytime. No caffeinated drinks are permitted.

Treatment and Staff

R House uses evidence-based therapeutic techniques to pinpoint causes and solutions for individuals and their families. All clients work with a case manager to create individualized treatment plans focused on mental health, vocational, educational and family needs.

Clients receive individual therapy on a weekly basis. An MFT creates a goal-oriented treatment plan and monitors each client’s progress. Since all clients are also identified as dual diagnosis, additional treatment needs are addressed.

Group therapy is an integral part of treatment at R House, bringing clients together to support each other and process at a group level. Clients attend groups focused on various topics including relapse prevention, anger management, social and employment skills, behavior modification and trauma. Groups are intended to be educational and therapeutic. Every other week, the family program addresses issues with the client’s home life. Therapists work with each family member together and individually to create a healthy home environment and address any negative patterns. All programming occurs during normal school hours, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 3 pm.

Additional services include an evaluation by a psychologist as well as medication management for mental stability. All clients are monitored at all times to ensure they are safely taking their medication without major side-effects and therapists are on the property at all times to assist with crisis intervention. In addition, clients are involved with 12-step fellowships in the surrounding community including young people’s AA/NA meetings, YPAA service activities and sober recreation.

Extras

R House offers gym memberships as well as weekly yoga classes. The charter school campuses also have basketball courts and organized outdoor activities for clients and staff to bond.

In Summary

Overall, R House provides treatment to an under-served population of substance abusers—young adults and teens suffering from dual diagnosis. This adolescent program aids young people who have been through the foster system with family dynamics, problems in school, pressure from peer groups and chemical imbalances. R House’s unique arrangement of residential accommodations, treatment and a school all on the same campus makes this a comprehensive option for young people and their families.
