Albuquerque new MexicoThe Basics

University of New Mexico is an expansive system of hospitals and offsite clinics located within or near Albuquerque. The Milagro Program is operated under the behavioral health department of UNM and offers an outpatient chemical dependency program designed to help pregnant women recover from chemical dependency. Since 1989, Milagro has helped over 2,000 women begin the process of recovery. The word “milagro” is a Spanish term meaning “miracle,” and this program aims to transform lives by helping expectant mothers through counseling services and case management.

Treatment and Staff

The Milagro Program is a hybrid track that unites perinatal medical care with a chemical dependency program using evidence-based practices and medical care. All potential clients must first schedule an appointment to be seen by the treatment intake team for a bio-psycho-social assessment. Clients in need of detox and/or Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) are given carefully planned doses of Suboxone or Methadone administered by addiction medicine specialists and overseen by Psychiatrists.

Treatment length is determined by progress and stage of pregnancy. All clients attend group therapy with those receiving MAT attending special groups for Suboxone support. Individual therapy is also integral to treatment so that clients are given the opportunity to process their unique challenges privately with their primary counselor.

Women are given an individualized treatment program that follows them through their pregnancy, birth and postnatal phases. Clients meet regularly with Physicians, their OBGYN, Case Managers and CACs. Some clients may also be referred to 12-step programs to support their recovery.

Extras

Expectant mothers who are struggling with addiction typically have a struggling family of origin. To foster a healthy home life and support system, the Milagro Program incorporates family therapy into treatment to ensure infants are supported by not only the mother but the extended family as well. Staff work with the family unit to educate them about addiction and how to ensure the mother and child are safe and in an environment conducive to recovery.

In Summary

The Milagro Program considers recovery a miracle for women who are pregnant and struggling with chemical dependency. To combat the shame and fear associated with substance abuse and motherhood, the clinical staff help create a path for women to have a healthy pregnancy and a thriving child. Through MAT and carefully tailored group and individual therapy sessions, clients can begin again with a fresh perspective. Case management ensures that clients have a post-natal plan in place to sustain recovery.
