Hampton Bay New YorkThe Basics

After finding recovery, Jack Hamilton wanted to give back to his community in New York. To this end, Hamilton established the Long Island Center for Recovery in 1995. Located in beautiful Hampton Bay, this facility offers both detox and residential care for men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Clients receive individualized treatment plans, which consist of group and individual therapy utilizing both traditional methods like the 12-step philosophy and CBT, as well as more holistic types of care like nutritional counseling, meditation and yoga.

Accommodations and Food

Residential treatment takes place in a 50-bed facility that is co-ed with the men and women residing in separate wings of the building. The home-like single story house is a cheerful color pink and offers spacious quarters without the clinical feel. The bedrooms are all double occupancy with shared bathrooms throughout the facility, and lounge areas with large couches and flat screen televisions mounted on the wall. The grounds provide a private oasis for clients with shady benches under trees, water features, meditation areas and a fish pond.

All food is provided by the facility and prepared on-site by a kitchen staff. The menu options have been designed by a dietician with the intension of providing malnourished clients with home cooked meals that are nutritious and replenish the body.

Treatment and Staff

This facility offers provides holistic care tailored to every client personal recovery needs, and includes a variety of therapeutic modalities. If the initial stage is detox, this process can last between three and seven days and is medically monitored 24 hours a day by medical staff. Most of the clients go into the residential program following this stage and immediately begin a 28-day protocol that includes a structured schedule of daily group and individual therapy.

There are co-ed and gender specific groups, led by one or two therapists per group. These sessions focus on communication skills and coping mechanisms, along some relapse prevention planning. The women’s group tends to focus on issues that addict and alcoholic women commonly deal with, like past traumas, sexual abuse, domestic violence and parenting troubles. There are also specialty groups for men and women that have grappled with the complications of a co-occurring disorder.

Therapy methods include CBT, EMDR and DBT, and holistic approaches like mindfulness meditation practices, or learning about a balance of nutrition and physical health. There are also several psychoeducation sessions and lectures that teach about living with the disease of addiction. The programs are led by therapists and medical staff with accreditations of LCSWs, CADCs and LPCs.

Extras

There is a garden and basketball court on-site, and a yoga room. There are also occasional outings and recreational activities, like attending sports games, hikes and team building exercises.

There is a specialty program that offers care for first responders and military veterans, which focuses on PTSD, trauma resolution and stress management.
