The Basics
Founded in 1969, Walden House started out as a homeless and runaway shelter for adolescents in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, California. In 2011, it merged with Haight Ashbury Free Clinics to form HealthRIGHT 360, which now serves as the parent company for all of Walden House’s outpatient and residential programs for the treatment of chemical dependency, mental illness and co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial intake assessment, clients work with staff to develop an individualized treatment plan. Care includes individual, group and family therapy. All treatment is rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), though approaches may vary. Medication-assisted treatment(MAT) is available using Suboxone. Additional trauma-informed support is provided for those who have been victims of crime or domestic violence and medication management is offered to clients with a dual diagnosis.
Staff consists of case managers, CADCs, LCSWs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Additional services include case management, GED assistance, life and job skills classes—like computer training—and resume building is available. Job placement is offered to clients who complete treatment.
Aftercare is available in the form of continued therapy at a stepped down rate. Alums can also be placed in sober living after completing primary care. Those looking for more intensive care, Walden House also has gender-specific and co-ed residential treatment programs for chemical dependency.
Walden House has special program tracks for African-Americans, parolees and transgender clients; referrals for HIV/AIDS medical assistance is also available.
In Summary
In all, Walden House Outpatient offers flexible, affordable and community-focused treatment programs for addiction, mental health and dual diagnosis. Using trauma-informed care and evidence-based practices, staff members are trained to work with a wide range of clientele. With a vast number of additional social services available through its parent company, Walden House Outpatient is a program worth consideration.
