The Basics
Texas Star Recovery is a program of the Texas Neurorehab Center, which provides long-term rehabilitative services and mental health services in Austin, Texas. TSR has both inpatient (which includes a detox unit) and outpatient substance abuse treatment programs, and the inpatient program provides dual diagnosis support. TSR is located the 67-acre campus of the Texas Neurorehab Center in the Greenleaf Estates section of Austin and has been in operation for over 60 years.
Accommodations and Food
Residents are housed in double-occupancy rooms in a treatment facility with one roommate. A kitchen staff makes standard American fare and delivers snacks to the treatment locations. The facility is home-like, with traditional décor, plants and colorful textiles.
The campus has a recreational area and ample grounds for walks as well as two swimming pools and staff accompany residents on weekly swimming outings.
Residents can also relax in the facility’s TV room and use the unit phones to make calls home. Cell phones and personal computers are not permitted. Additionally, TSR provides residents with a free on-site laundry facility.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment plans at TSR are typically two- to four-weeks in duration. Residents in need of detox stay in the detox unit for three to five days before enrolling in the inpatient treatment program. After their intake and assessment, residents are given a treatment plan that includes daily group and individual therapy. Clients are also asked to attend daily 12-step meetings, with transportation provided by staff.
Therapy uses both CBT and DBT, among other evidence-based modalities, and addresses coping skills and anger management. Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists including LCSWs, LPCs and LMFTs and LCDCs. The treatment team also includes psychiatrists and nurse practitioners who can provide additional therapy and medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders.
TSR also offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opiate addicts using Suboxone.
Extras
Inpatient clients can also attend weekly yoga classes. Family members can visit on Friday evenings and weekend days. For aftercare, many of TSR’s residents step down to the outpatient program. The treatment team provides non-local clients with recommendations and referrals for outpatient treatment in their area.
Families are encouraged to attend a Monday evening family education group (with visitation time available after). Alumni of TSR can also attend its weekly alumni meeting every Wednesday.
TSR is an approved Tricare provider, offering treatment to military personnel and their families.
