The Basics
Based in San Mateo, California, Mills-Peninsula Health Services is a multi-faceted healthcare company. Its Substance Abuse Treatment program uses a medical approach to recovery from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. The program includes acute detox, inpatient stabilization and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
Upon intake, clients undergo an initial assessment to determine the program that would best suit their needs. Detox is offered at Mills-Peninsula’s hospital, with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) available as necessary. This phase generally lasts three to five days; however, if more stabilization is required, there is an option to extend up to an additional seven days.
Once stabilized, client begin the IOP, which consists of individual and group therapy. Therapists use evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), in addition to psychoeducation, stress management and relapse prevention techniques. Additional support for clients with co-occurring disorders, as well as family and relationship counseling, is also available as needed. While 12-step participation is not always required, the facility does host AA, NA, Alanon and Codependents Anonymous meetings on-site.
The staff includes MDs, psychiatrists, RNs, LCSWs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

A free weekly aftercare support group is available to anyone who has completed a primary care program and is open to family members and significant others.
Additional services include extensive mental health treatment for adults, adolescents and seniors as a separate treatment path and can include detox, IOP and residential care if necessary.
