Brooklin OntarioThe Basics

The Paul J. Sullivan Centre of Brooklin, Ontario, Canada is a men’s only residential rehab. Originally opened in 1983, the facility was named after the founder of the Renascent Center, the parent organization. Treatment is abstinence-based and consists of comprehensive evidence-based methods applied in group and individual therapy and also incorporates the 12-step philosophy .

Accommodations and Food

Treatment at the Sullivan Centre takes place in a historic home on a quiet, tree lined residential street in Ontario. The facility can accommodate up to 30 clients and offers shared bedrooms furnished simply with full beds and ample storage space. The home, which was recently remodeled in the last few years, offers a state of the art kitchen with new appliances, on-site laundry and a large dining room. The exterior of the Victorian home has a wrap-around porch that is covered by an awning that provides shaded protection from the elements while sitting and enjoying the day on comfy chairs. Clients often walk the tree shrouded, perfectly manicured grounds or take in the water feature in the back of the house.

Three meals a day are served in the shared dining area and prepared by on-site kitchen staff. Nutation is a key part of recovery at this facility and the meals, which are offered from a set menu, are healthy and delicious. There are also small snacks throughout the day, but clients have the option of getting their own snacks with their own money.

Treatment and Staff

In order to begin treatment at the Paul J. Sullivan Centre all clients have to enter into the program already clean and sober. Depending on the substance, the length of time the client has be abstinent is between three and eight days. There isn’t a detox facility on the premises, but the staff is able to provide referrals to an outside agency. Clients also meet with a medical director upon admission to get a full physical and mental health assessment, and medications can be issued and monitored by staff.

The primary treatment program, which averages between 28 and 35 days, consists of weekly psychoeducation classes, daily group therapy and a minimum of one individual session per week. The client has the freedom to choose the therapist that they’d like to work with at the beginning of treatment which allows for more personalized care. Therapeutic methods include traditional and holistic modalities, including CBT, mindfulness techniques and art therapy. There are mandatory daily AA meetings every client attends both on and off campus. There is a focus on building a support community and getting a sponsor.

The staff members at this facility bring personal and professional experience to their clients, as they are also people in long-term recovery and can offer guidance. The addiction counselors are CADCs and LCSWs.

Extras

There is an intensive family program that includes a weekend of counseling and education that occurs monthly, and a four day children’s program which covers coping techniques and parenting classes. There are also specific programs offered to business professionals and employers.

In Summary

The lovely home-like facility provides an extra layer of comfort for the men who enter into treatment, whether it’s their first experience or they’ve been to several different rehabs. The programs are very client centered, giving them more of a sense of control regarding their treatment and offering valuable tools for recovery success.
