Sobriety 1stThe Basics

Founded in 2013, Sobriety First Sober Living in Aurora, Colorado, accommodates up to 90 clients in recovery from chemical dependency. Sobriety First operates nine houses for both men and women. Their belief is that “sobriety is a journey and not a destination” and they seek to incorporate that philosophy by providing clients with an environment brimming with fellowship and support.

Accommodations and Amenities

Residents live in tidy single-family homes and are typically paired in double-occupancy rooms. The houses are each located within walking distance of shopping, public transportation and AA/NA meetings. Clients purchase their own food and meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, residents must have completed detox and pass a drug screening. Within two weeks of arrival, residents must seek employment or arrange some other feasible financial resources. Those who are disabled and receiving SSI disability benefits are required to participate in regular community service. Other requirements include attending five 12-step meetings per week, being at in-house meetings, getting a sponsor and working the steps.

Clients must also perform regular household chores. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted by live-in resident managers. At Sobriety First, there is zero tolerance for clients testing positive, theft, sex on the premises and any threats of violence. The 30-day cost is $680 including a $20 house supply fee. For those paying their rent online, the 30-day cost is $700. Additionally, there is a $165-$170 security deposit.

Extras

At Sobriety First, residents are provided with welcome laundry baskets full of personal necessities, snacks, a notebook, pen and non-perishable food items.

Sobriety First hosts special events for residents and their families. Clients participate in volleyball games, barbeques and an annual pie-eating contest.

In Summary

While houses are gender-specific, both the men and women participate in outdoor get-togethers. This sober living environment creates a sense of fellowship and camaraderie, which is healing for newly clean and sober clients. However, for those who desire a more comprehensive approach, including transitional care, this might not be the right place.
