The Basics
Aloha House, Inc. was established in 1977 to provide substance abuse and mental health treatment services to the residents of Maui County, Hawaii. Aloha House operates residential treatment and sober living programs in Makawao and two outpatient clinics—one for substance abuse and the other for co-occurring disorders—in Wailuku.
In 2008, Aloha House merged with Malama Family Recovery Center and Maui Youth and Family Services to offer family-centered mental health and substance abuse care. Its new mission is “to promote recovery and healthy lifestyles to individuals and families by providing compassionate, effective and comprehensive behavioral health services with the spirit of excellence and aloha.”
Treatment and Staff
Aloha House’s outpatient substance abuse treatment program provides care at both the standard outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels. IOP clients attend group therapy three times a week for eight weeks and have individual therapy once a week. Standard outpatient clients attend groups once a week for 12 weeks and have individual therapy as-needed.
The treatment team includes MFTs and CSAC addiction counselors who use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Therapy groups usually contain eight to 10 participants. While Aloha House doesn’t require clients to attend 12-step meetings as a part of their treatment plan, it strongly encouraged and clients are provided with schedules for nearby meetings.
A few blocks away from the outpatient clinic is Aloha House’s Co-Occurring Day Treatment facility. This program provides treatment at the Partial-Hospitalization Program (PHP) level for addicts with severe mental health diagnoses such as bipolar or schizo-affective disorder.
Clients attend treatment Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm and on Tuesdays from 9 am to 12 pm. Most clients attend this program for at least six months. Their daily schedule includes group therapy, psychoeducation classes, individual therapy and recreational and art therapy. The treatment team—which includes Master’s-level therapists and psychiatrists—uses CBT and MI, among other evidence-based modalities, and encourages clients to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings such as SMART Recovery outside of treatment.
Many clients come into the Co-Occurring Day Treatment program from residential care. They usually have case managers and outside psychiatrists who work with Aloha House to craft and implement their treatment and aftercare plans.
Extras
Adolescent treatment and family therapy can be accessed through Aloha House’s affiliate, Maui Youth and Family Services.
In Summary
Aloha House, Inc. provides two outpatient treatment programs, one for clients with a primary diagnosis of substance abuse and one for clients with co-occurring disorders with severe mental health challenges.
