The Potter’s House Substance Abuse Center offers outpatient treatment services in the Phoenix area to court-mandated clients and those who are self-enrolled. It was founded in 2005 by Georgia Jones, whose own struggle with addiction inspired her to create a facility where clients could get structured recovery. All of The Potter House’s outpatient sessions are held in one of their two facilitiesa three-story office building, with seven rooms set aside for their program sessions, in North Phoenix, and a similar office location in Sun City.

Treatment and Staff

Typically, clients attend Potter’s House for about 18 weeks. While enrolled, they have to attend one group session a week though they’re free to create their own schedules with multiple sessions per week. The sessions address topics such as anger management, domestic violence, mental health and medication monitoring.

Clients also have access to one-on-one sessions with a licensed counselor, and it’s possible to set up family sessions as well. During initial intake sessions, clients can create programs that are tailored toward their individual needs. The average cost per session for court-mandated clients is $20; for those who show up of their own volition, each session is $75. Individual counseling costs an additional $40 for each session.

Group sessions meet Tuesday mornings from 10 am to noon and on Friday evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm. The Potter’s House is not as 12-step heavy as other facilities, though they do touch on the core concepts of AA and can assist clients in finding local meetings (though these aren’t mandatory). The Potter’s House does not have a comprehensive aftercare program, though residents may continue to attend substance abuse and relapse prevention groups after their initial program.

Medical detox isn’t offered at The Potter’s House. While there is a nurse practitioner on staff, clients have no contact with medical doctors or psychiatrists during their sessions (aside from meeting with a doctor during initial intake). For self-referring residents, separate intake sessions with a psychiatrist can be set up when necessary, and medication can be prescribed. These psychiatric evaluations cost an additional $125.

Extras

The Potters House is planning to expand their services to include group sessions for family members affected by substance abuse, with a specific focus on children. The program will include educational seminars, family workshops and activities aimed at family reunification.

In Summary

The Potter’s House offers a variety of recovery services that may reshape clients’ life. While there is some room for individualizing treatment, clients should be aware that this is a very basic facility, with few perks or specialty programs. That being said, it is extremely affordable and for certain clients may provide the right guidance during a time of crisis or as a stepping stone to further recovery.
