Inwood Community ServicesThe Basics

Located in New York, New York, Inwood Community Services (ICS) is a community-based not-for-profit organization. It was established in 1979 by Father John J. Foley and a group of neighborhood residents. In addition to a host of other services, ICS provides a medically supervised, comprehensive outpatient clinic for adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse.

Treatment and Staff

ICS provides individual, group and family counseling to help combat addiction. Clients attend a duration and frequency that depends on their individual needs and circumstances. Group counseling focuses on techniques for relapse prevention, the role of spirituality in recovery, anger management issues and gender-specific topics. Individual meetings are once a week for 45 minutes and group therapy is an hour. There is also a group dedicated to clients with co-occurring disorders. The program is not 12-step based, but clients are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings off-site outside of their structured treatment. There are also no detox services but referrals can be made if necessary.

ICS is staffed by bilingual clinicians who offer services in both English and Spanish. The interdisciplinary team includes licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, CASACs, mental health counselors and registered nurses. There are eight full-time staff counselors and two part-time counselors. The staff-to-client ratio is an average of 20-to-25.

Extras

ICS provides other programs besides substance abuse treatment. It has a mental health clinic, an adult literacy and education program and a child and family prevention and wellness program. In addition, it has after school and youth employment programming.

In Summary

Inwood Community Services is different from other programs within its price range because the culturally relevant and competent staff is more than 50 percent bilingual, a serious asset for the community it serves. All services are both in English and Spanish. In addition, there are morning and evening tracks, so clients have flexibility in scheduling. Furthermore, it offers solid support for loved ones affected by substance abuse. All in all, this is an excellent resource for those in the area.
