The Basics
Los Alamos Family Council was founded in 1962 in Los Alamos, New Mexico as a non-profit organization. Initially just a small family counseling center, it has since expanded into a full substance abuse treatment and mental health facility. Los Alamos offers outpatient services to adult men and women in northern New Mexico.
Treatment and Staff
The intake process at Los Alamos begins with an initial phone call followed by an in-person meeting with a counselor. If the person is deemed a good fit for the program, the counselor devises a treatment plan for him or her. Clients in need of more extensive care are referred to local residential or detox facilities. Although Los Alamos accepts private insurance, the organization also assists clients applying for Medicaid and state funding for treatment.
Los Alamos’ Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is 90 hours of treatment and involves both group and individual counseling. The length and intensity of the IOP is based on the counselor’s assessment of the needs of the client, however clients generally attend group meetings between one and three times a week. Los Alamos’s counselors use the Matrix Model materials and the counseling is aimed at education, sharing, emotional regulation and relapse prevention. The groups generally last for two hours and have five to 12 clients at a time. Individual counseling is available based on the needs of the client. The organization is dual diagnosis and offers individual sessions with a mental health counselor for clients with potential co-occurring disorders.
Although Los Alamos is not 12-step oriented, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA and NA groups while in the program.
Los Alamos’ counselors consist of a mixture of LPCs and LMSWs.
Extras
As far as family programming is concerned, Los Alamos offers individual meetings with the counselor, client and their family members. However, these meetings are only offered based on the consent of the client. The sessions aim to address family issues that might have affected the client’s substance abuse history and establish healthy communication practices in the family.
The organization does not have an official aftercare program, but clients are allowed to step down gradually from the program. When leaving Los Alamos, most clients initially start attending group meetings once a week and then once every other week.
Los Alamos operates two separate Youth Activity Centers, one in White Rock and the other in nearby Ashley Park. These centers offer free, supervised programs to children in grades three through eight. These centers are open everyday during the summers, vacations and school year.
The organization also offers DWI school to court ordered clients.
