The Basics
Freedom Institute is a state-licensed outpatient facility for substance abuse recovery in the heart of midtown Manhattan. It has been offering individuals and families in the greater New York community personalized, comprehensive care for alcohol and substance abuse since 1976.
Founded by recovering alcoholic Mona Mansell, Freedom facilitated one of the first intervention programs in the nation. It claims to be the only rehab in the country that combines Intensive Outpatient (IOP) treatment with a family systems recovery approach.
Treatment and Staff
Recovery at Freedom begins with an extensive assessment interview and an individualized treatment plan. Freedom can facilitate a coordinated intervention based on the Albany-Rochester Interventional Sequence for Engagement (ARISE) and the Vernon Johnson model developed in the 1960s, encouraging ambivalent addicts to choose recovery.
Freedom’s Family Program is the core of its treatment. Their therapists are trained to use a holistic approach to recovery and integrate all significant parties in the process. Through family and multi-family counseling, their specialists identify and repair family patterns that perpetuate addictive behavior. Clinicians also focus on the inter-relationships between family members, partners, significant others and parents through DBT. They help develop skills for coping with loved ones who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and address depression, anxiety, learning issues, body image challenges and trauma.
For adolescents ages 13 to 19, the emphasis is on preventive education, employing family and individual therapy. Iissues relevant to the transitional, stressful nature of teenage years are addressed.
The Freedom Institute’s programs are 12-step affiliated. Detox and dual diagnosis can be arranged through referrals. Sessions vary in length based on level of treatment, with more intense sessions occurring on the weekends and before 9:00 am and after 5:00 pm weekdays.
Freedom’s staff of skilled clinicians offers sophisticated, evidence-based therapy. Their multidisciplinary, advanced-degree team consists of 25 members with credentials including CASAC, LCSW and CSAC. Boasting experience in addiction medicine, individual psychotherapy, family systems, DBT, psychodrama, art therapy, mindful meditation, the Minnesota Model, and Motivational Interviewing (MI), the team here is truly well-rounded.

Freedom Institute is conveniently located in the Dumont Building in midtown Manhattan. Bicycles are permitted in the building, which is accessible by the E and M subway trains.
The organization sponsors events throughout the year that bring those suffering from addiction into contact with the greater community of people and institutions that care about and support recovery. Their newsletter addresses all aspects of addiction and recovery.
In Summary
The dignity of the individual and family affected by substance abuse is the key principle of treatment at Freedom Institute. The rehab’s blend of intensive outpatient treatment with family systems recovery offers a unique path toward recovery from addiction.
