The Basics
Located located about an hour northwest of Minneapolis in Monticello, Minnesota, Prairie House Recovery Center is the girls residential facility of Maple Lake Recovery Center. It caters to females between the ages of 13 to 18 struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Prairie House offers structured, evidence based therapy methods and frequent group and individual therapy.
Accommodations and Food
Prairie House provides a home-like atmosphere in a four bedroom, two-bath two story home. This facility is in a family-friendly neighborhood that is private and safe. There are eight beds available for the clients who share bedrooms. Comfortable common spaces are found throughout the house and a community television in the living room and soft couches where the clients can relax at the end of the day. The facility is non-smoking and also doesn’t allow gum or candy, but there are smoking cessation aids available to clients with prior approval.
There are three meals provided daily and prepared by an on-site cook. The meals are healthy and made from natural ingredients. There is a set menu, but the facility is able to work with clients who have food allergies.
Treatment and Staff
The young women who participate in the treatment programs offered through the Maple Lake Recovery Center have a structured schedule of daily group sessions, psychoeducation and homework. Treatment focuses on helping the clients rebuild family relationships, work through self esteem issues and establish personal accountability. The end going being clients re-introduced into their communities with a renewed sense of responsibility and purpose. Family participation in is mandatory for every client.
This facility offers individualized programs and length of stay varies from client to client, but typically the minimum stay is about three months. There are daily group therapy sessions and one or two individual therapy sessions per week. There is also an introduction to the 12 steps and written assignments, like journaling, on a regular basis. Those who come into the program with an established co-occurring disorder are eligible for regular visits with the staff psychiatrist and medication management services are provided.
The staff of Prairie House offers much experience working with teens with addictions and includes LPCs, LCSWs, physicians, LPNs, and CADCs.
Extras
Regular recreational activities like camping excursions, volleyball and a ROPES course are offered and as the individual moves through the program. Also, more privileges are allowed, like more phone time or visitation.
There is a family program intensive that’s offered one weekend a month and includes education and counseling services.

Being a teenage girl is tough enough without having the added stress of struggling with addiction. The staff of Prairie House Recovery Center knows this and designs their programs to address the issues surrounding teens today as well at giving them the tools to maintain a life of sobriety.
