The Basics
Project ADAM Community Assistance Center, Inc, in Winder, Georgia has been treating recovering addicts and alcoholics since 1980. Project ADAM (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Ministries) was founded by a group of ministers who saw the need for additional substance abuse treatment in their community. They believed in combating addiction through direct services, community education and family activities. The program offers residential treatment for men, 19 years and older, as well as outpatient care for adults. Because of its roots, Project ADAM has a Christian-based component to its program.
Accommodations and Food
Rooms are modestly decorated with twin beds and some storage space for personal items, which should be limited to casual and recreational clothing—including a swim suit and flip-flops—and toiletries. Clients sleep four to a room and linens and towels are provided. Any 12-step literature is permitted but computers, cameras and electronic games are not. Residents are also urged to bring their insurance card and some cash with them to treatment.
Three meals a day are provided, with breakfast and dinner eaten on-site and packed lunches given to clients to take with them to work.
Treatment and Staff
With a minimum stay of 12 months, the all-male residential program is open to men with a serious commitment to recovery, who are over 18 years old and are either self-admitted or court-ordered. However, those with violent or sexually-based offenses on their record or who are receiving disability benefits will not be admitted. Project ADAM also operates similarly to a sober living in that residents are required to maintain full-time employment within the community during treatment.
Communal treatment typically begins after residents get out of work. Following dinner, clients attend two to three hours of group therap and several days a week, they are permitted to attend off-site AA and NA meetings. Individual therapy takes place at scheduled times during the week and employs evidence-based modalities such as CBT and Moral Reconation therapy to allow clients to explore specific issues in their recovery. Prime for Life and Prime Solutions techniques are also used and addiction-related issues like relapse prevention, workplace couching and lifestyle issues are addressed. Counselors may refer clients to outside groups such as anger management. On Sundays, all residents are required to attend church.
The outpatient program is offered in two levels. Level I meets on Tuesdays for three hours and follows the state’s mandated curriculum for driver’s license reinstatement. Level II meets three to four times a week and is typically reserved for court-ordered clientele. Project ADAM recently added Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to their program by way of Suboxone.
Extras
The facility offers a 16-week anger management course that meets every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 pm and costs $25 a session.
In Summary
Project ADAM offers men and women who are committed to recovering from alcohol and drug addiction a safe and structured environment to start their journey. With its all-male residential program operating more like a sober living, clients have the advantage of submersing themselves in treatment while not disrupting their financial obligations or their work history. Though a faith-based organization, Project ADAM does not promote spiritual recovery to the exclusion of evidence-based modalities and puts a lot of emphasis on rebuilding individual lives in order to rebuild the family and its surrounding community. This is a unique and affordable treatment program is a great option for locals who are ready to do the work.
