The Basics
Based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, UNC Medical Center’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Outpatient Treatment program provides assessments, evaluations, individualized treatment plans, group therapy, medication management, and didactic and processing groups for adults and adolescents struggling with chemical dependency. Additionally, its affiliation with UNC hospitals allows the organization to provide a wide variety of ancillary healthcare services for those in need.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial intake and assessment, clients work with staff members to develop a treatment plan that best suits their needs. Programs are designed to be flexible and accommodate a number of schedules and treatment intensities.
All programs are made up of group and individual therapy using evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Psychoeducational sessions are also worked into the program, as are multifamily therapy groups, if necessary. The adolescent track, which is open to clients 13 to 21 years old, uses much of the same treatment modalities as the adult program but focuses on topics and issues specific to its demographic. Because of the facility’s extensive medical and psychiatric staff, clients with a dual diagnosis receive additional psychiatric support and medication management. While 12-step participation is not a requirement, clients are encouraged to attend off-site meetings as they wish.
The staff includes LCSWs, CNAs, MDs, CCSs, psychiatrists and other PhD and Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Additional services include DUI/DWI classes for court-ordered clients in three different levels: 20, 40 and 90 hour tracks. UNC Medical Center is also a comprehensive behavioral health hospital and a complete list of services provided can be found on its website.
In Summary
In all, UNC Medical Center’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse Outpatient Treatment program provides comprehensive chemical dependency treatment to adults and adolescents. Using a combination of evidence-based modalities, educational groups and family therapy, along with substantial support for clients with co-occurring disorders, the diverse and highly-trained staff at UNC Medical Center offers solid outpatient care to those in the area. While potential clients may find the program to be slightly more expensive than other outpatient programs of its kind (depending on insurance), the facility’s expansive resources certainly justify the cost.
