The Basics
Located in midtown Detroit, the Detroit Central City Health Center offers several outpatient services to clients dealing with substance abuse issues. DCCHC is considered a landmark within the city in terms of servicing various populations in need throughout Wayne County. In operation for more than 40 years, it works in collaboration with numerous city social service agencies and also treats addiction with co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
The clinical staff of DCCHC administers treatment using a range of modalities including Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and Stagewise Treatment, a model used primarily with clients admitted into the Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment (IDDP) program and and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The number of individual therapy sessions provided to clients depends on the treatment program they are enrolled in. IDDT clients, for example, meet weekly and, as their treatment progresses, monthly.
Group therapy takes place twice a week for 60 minutes, and is available for clients in IOP. The size of groups ranges from four to six. Because some clients also suffer from severe mental illness, they may continue in treatment longer than the usual 30 days depending on their specific needs. DCCHC is 12-step oriented and the steps are discussed and used as part of a support system that aligns with each individual’s treatment program. Clients are encouraged, but not required to attend AA/NA meetings off-site.
If detox is needed, DCCH refers clients to a nearby hospital. DCCHC clinical staff includes LCSWs, CADCs and a Ph.D psychologist. Clinicians are a mix of men and women, enabling clients to meet with a counselor of their own gender if comfort is an issue.
Extras
DCCHC provides aftercare services for alumni, including monthly relapse prevention meetings.
In Summary
Detroit Central City Health Center is an excellent option for those dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Its location and affordability in midtown Detroit make it accessible for clients of all walks of life to participate in outpatient care and get the help they need.
