The Basics
Founded in 1991, Professional Psychology Associates, PC offers outpatient substance abuse treatment for adolescents and adults, in addition to several standalone services for psychological issues. It has locations in Mesa, Glendale and Phoenix, Arizona.
Treatment and Staff
For the adolescent programs, the initial intake requires an in-person interview with both the eligible child, ages 12 to 18, and their parent (though not necessarily at the same time). All programs require that prospective clients be relatively mentally stable so those suffering from severe co-occurring disorders may be given a referral elsewhere; however, clients concurrently in treatment for mood disorders may be admitted.
Detox is not available and an initial drug screening may be conducted so those in need of this initial phase of treatment should seek an outside referral. Once admitted, an individualized treatment plan is developed and the client begins one of the Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
Both the adolescent and adult IOP lasts for 10 weeks and are made up of group therapy three times a week. The adolescent program also requires that parents attend one multifamily therapy session a week. Treatment is evidence-based using Motivational Interviewing (MI) and adheres to the Stages of Change model. Groups address family systems, relapse prevention, communication skills and peer pressure. Clients submit to regular and random drug testing and may be required to attend off-site AA, NA and SMART Recovery meetings. Staff consists of psychiatrists and psychologists.
Extras
After completion of one of the primary care programs, referrals for stepped down therapy as aftercare can be made. Additional standalone services include psychiatric assessments, substance abuse evaluations, interventions and psychotherapy for children and adults. The facility also offers EAP and DOT assessments and evaluations as needed.
In Summary
Professional Psychology Associates, PC offers comprehensive IOPs for teens and adults suffering from substance abuse issues and mild dual diagnosis. With a foundation in group therapy, clients receive peer support—which can be especially valuable in recovering teens—as well as educational sessions and evidenced-based therapy practices. The outpatient format allows clients to build a local support system outside of treatment, which may also include 12-step communities. All this, along with the required parental involvement and additional psychological services for adults, makes Professional Psychology Associates, PC a valuable resource.
