The Basics
The Loudoun County Mental Health Department was founded in 1973 in Sterling, Virginia, a small suburb of Washington, DC. Today, the organization operates two locations in Sterling and Leesburg, Virginia. Loudoun County offers outpatient treatment to adult men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
The intake process at Loudoun County begins with a phone assessment to help determine if the client is a good fit for the program. Clients then meet in person with a counselor to devise a treatment plan that fits their needs. In order to accommodate clients of all economic backgrounds, the organization operates on a sliding scale. Clients who might benefit from a higher level of care are referred to outside residential or detox facilities.
The program’s length and intensity differ for every individual but the treatment always consists of both group and individual counseling. The group sizes are small and usually consist of eight clients per group. Counselors aim to address each client’s unique needs in group sessions and use education, sharing, relapse prevention and some CBT. Individual meetings are also scheduled based on client need. Although Loudoun County’s treatment is not particularly 12-step oriented, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA and NA groups while in the program.
Loudoun County is equipped to provide dual diagnosis support and refers clients with potential co-occurring disorders to on staff mental health counselors and psychiatrists. The staff at Loudoun County is comprised of mental health counselors and LPCs.
Extras
Loudoun County does not facilitate an official aftercare program but clients are encouraged to regularly check back in with their therapists to help track their progress. Upon client request, Loudoun County also offers individual family sessions with the client, counselor and their loved ones.
