The Basics
Manning Family Recovery Center (MFRC) provides detox and residential treatment in Manning, Iowa, a small town 90 miles east of Des Moines. MFRC is a department of the Manning Regional Healthcare Center and opened its doors in 1982. Its mission is “to provide safe, efficient, and effective chemical dependency treatment to chemically dependent individuals and their families across the Midwest.” In addition to detox and residential treatment, MFRC also has several levels of outpatient care.
Accommodations and Food
Residents are housed in a treatment facility unit that has 13 beds. Most residents have roommates. Manning Regional Healthcare’s cafeteria provides all snacks and meals and can accommodate clients’ allergies and dietary restrictions.
When not in treatment, residents can watch TV in the unit’s common area and play games and make craft projects in the building’s recreation room. Residents are also transported to recreational events and may play outdoor games and sports when the weather permits.
Residents are not permitted to bring cell phones or computers into treatment. They may call home on the unit phones and are asked to bring prepaid phone cards.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment plans last 28 to 32 days, with detox lasting one to five days. After an assessment, clients receive a treatment plan that includes daily group and individual therapy as well as psychoeducation classes. Groups address the disease model of addiction, triggers and relapse prevention. The treatment team also encourages clients to use the 12-step framework and transports residents to community AA/NA meetings each week.
While the treatment team is familiar with co-occurring disorders, MFRC is not a dual diagnosis facility and is unable to treat individuals with additional mental health issues beyond substance abuse and chemical dependency.
The treatment team includes nurses, physicians, psychologists, Master’s-level therapists including MSWs, and a co-dependency counselor.
Extras
Residents can schedule family visits once per week. MFRC also has a robust family program that includes therapy and education and support groups for the “concerned persons” in an addict’s life.
After completing their residential treatment plan, many clients continue treatment in MFRC’s outpatient program and then in its Continuing Care group. All alumni and family are eligible to attend one year of the Continuing Care group, which meets on Wednesday evenings, free of charge.
In Summary
Manning Family Recovery Center has provided residential treatment in West Central Iowa for over three decades. Its small size, expansive family program and multiple levels of care might make it an especially strong choice for the person motivated to change and whose familial support system desires to be part of the process.
