The Basics
Gateway Community Services has been treating the residents of Jacksonville, Florida for over 35 years. Over time, it has grown into a multi-track facility providing detox, residential and outpatient services for adults and adolescents. It also offers a variety of aftercare and transitional services such as halfway houses and online substance abuse counseling.
Accommodations and Food
Upon seeking treatment at GCS, potential clients are given a bio-psycho-social assessment. Clients who need to detox before entering residential treatment can do so at its new nearby 20-bed detox facility. Depending on the acuity of the addiction, detox typically takes between four to ten days.
Residential clients have a roommate and shared bathroom and TVs are available in the facility’s common areas. Presently, there is no exercise equipment in the facility. Residents take their meals in the facility cafeteria, which serves standard American fare.
Treatment and Staff
The minimum stay for inpatient treatment is 30 days, though residents may decide to stay longer at the request of their counselors. Treatment at GCS is a combination of evidence-based modalities such as CBT and the 12-step framework. Group therapy is scheduled daily, with groups assigned according to issues identified by each client’s counselor. Individual therapy is scheduled as-needed. Residents are encouraged to attend daily on-site 12-step meetings.
The treatment team at GCS is fully equipped to treat co-occurring disorders. The team includes Master’s-level therapists including Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs), addiction counselors, nurses and psychiatrists.
Family members of clients are asked to attend the on-site weekly Al-anon meeting every Wednesday evening. After attending the meeting, they can then visit with the resident.
Extras
GCS has several outpatient tracks that clients can step down to upon completion of residential treatment. Outpatient clients also have access to a free childcare program while they attend treatment. GCS maintains a robust alumni association for additional support and has launched an online counseling service. It also provides counseling services in Spanish. Additionally, GCS is in the midst of a seven-million-dollar capital campaign to renovate its Stockton Street facilities.
In Summary
Gateway Community Services has deep roots in the Jacksonville community with over 35 years of successfully delivering substance abuse treatment. Its variety of treatment tracks and combination of evidence-based therapies and sober support meetings ensures that each client’s vulnerabilities can be identified quickly and addressed effectively.
