Houston TexasThe Basics

Founded in 2016 in Houston, Texas, Transcend Texas is part of the Transcend Recovery network, which includes high-end sober living homes in Los Angeles and one in New York. Transcend Texas caters to young adult men, between the ages of 18 and 30, who are in early recovery from chemical dependency. Transcend Texas is highly structured, and includes around the clock staffing, regular drug and alcohol screenings as well as transitional care.

Accommodations and Amenities

Located in the lush neighborhood of Houston Heights, Transcend Texas is a spacious pale yellow-shingled split-level house with a covered porch with white columns. The corner house is shrouded with trees, and includes a pristine lawn. The backyard has a huge pool and patio. Transcend Texas accommodates 12 men, each lodged in spacious double-occupancy rooms which include full-sized beds with wooden headboards, nightstands with contemporary lamps, closets and dressers. One room features wall-to-wall windows, while another room has glass doors leading out to a patio. The loft-like rooms feature high ceilings, ceiling fans and modern style lighting.

The fully equipped kitchen and pantry is stocked with groceries, and clients prepare their own breakfasts and lunches. A gourmet chef prepares dinner made from healthy, organic food. Food allergies, heart healthy and vegetarian diets are accommodated. Amenities include a gym membership, the pool, Wi-Fi and full transportation, provided to 12-step meetings, recovery-related appointments, work, school and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). The house includes around-the-clock staff.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, potential clients complete an interview and pass an alcohol and drug screening. Those with traces of marijuana are accepted, because the drug takes time to be flushed out of the system, but any potential client who is intoxicated, or who fails a heroin or opiate screening is not admitted. Those who wish to join the household must have already completed detox.

During the first 30 days, residents are transported to five weekly 12-step meetings, go to the gym and attend IOP (if applicable). Clients also attend school, volunteer or look for work. Clients are assigned sobriety buddies, typically senior residents or staff, who act as chaperones. After 30 days, residents are allotted more freedom. Requirements include attending four weekly 12-step meetings, and maintaining recovery protocols, as well as work, academic or community service commitments.

A typical day begins with wakeup at 8 am, followed by making beds and performing house chores. At nine am, clients participate in morning meditation. Between 9:30 am and 3:30 pm, clients work on recovery-related activities. Those six hours are referred to as the “recovery block.” After that time, residents go to the gym. Later, they share a family-style dinner, and are transported to a nightly 12-step meeting. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays.

At Transcend Texas, drug and alcohol screenings are conducted twice a week. Relapsed residents are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Extras

Other services include vocational and academic support, family weekends, two weekly experiential group sessions, art therapy and equine therapy. The family weekends take place every other month, and focus on helping relatives and clients establish healthy boundaries and communication. The experiential groups include acupuncture, yoga, meditation and Big Book study. Group topics include mindfulness techniques, spiritual expression and goal setting.

Vocational and academic support includes resume building, helping with school enrollment and teaching job-interviewing skills. For senior residents who have culinary aspirations, Transcend Texas offers an onsite, paid apprenticeship positions with the house chef, and also has close relationships with local businesses that provide job opportunities for clients.

In Summary

Transcend Texas leaves no stone unturned when it comes to providing comprehensive transitional care, as well as luxurious, yet structured, sober living. Accountability and community are huge here, and clients develop a sense of camaraderie, which is often beneficial in early recovery.
