The Basics
Since their founding in 1972, Catholic Human Services, Inc. has provided mental and physical health services for individuals and families regardless of their faith orientation. Founded by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord, CHS operates out of five facilities in the state of Michigan and 16 satellite offices throughout the United States. In addition to senior and social services, adoption and pregnancy counseling, CHS provides outpatient substance abuse treatment for adults and adolescents utilizing evidence-based methods.
Treatment and Staff
CHS offers a non-intensive level one outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents intended for individuals that do not require residential or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Prior to enrolling, all clients must schedule an appointment with intake for an assessment, a process which helps to ensure that the program intensity is the correct level for the client. Counselors build individualized treatment plans with each client to ensure that they are receiving the type of treatment they need. Dual diagnosis support is offered for those clients who have co-occurring disorders. All clients attend two- to three-hour therapeutic sessions once per week with both evening and daytime treatment hours available.
The primary method of treatment at CHS is group therapy. Therapists use a combination of Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and DBT techniques. Groups are co-ed and incorporate psychoeducation, relapse prevention and life skills building groups. Gender specific groups are available as well as specialty groups that target topics tailored for both adults and adolescents. Support is also available for clients who have been court-mandated into treatment, and treatment plans are designed to fulfill court requirements.
Clients must also attend 12-step meetings in conjunction with treatment. Getting a sponsor and working through the steps is highly encouraged by the treatment staff.
Individual therapy is available but only on a bi-weekly basis (or less). Counselors work directly with clients to address more private topics and to prepare the client for eventual discharge. Clients typically remain in treatment for eight to 10 weeks in total. All treatment staff are Master’s-level therapists including CASACs, LPCs and LCSWs.
Extras
While there are no alumni or family assistance programs, CHS offers additional services through their facilities that may be of assistance to the client. Senior and social services as well as pregnancy and adoption services are available.
In Summary
The Catholic Human Services facility provides non-denominational treatment for adults and adolescents through their nation-wide network of community-oriented facilities. Clients do not have to identify as Catholic in order to receive treatment. Substance abuse treatment is low intensity but clients are also expected to pursue support through 12-step fellowships in the surrounding area. CHS is likely a good fit for those wishing to receive treatment while maintaining work and family obligations as they develop a solid recovery foundation.
