The Basics
Based in the Philadelphia suburb of Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania, Family and Community Service of Delaware County is a non-profit counseling agency with a history dating back to 1913. The organization has offices in the nearby towns of Media and Chester as well as community-oriented facilities in the Upper Darby and William Penn school districts. It provides outpatient care for both court-ordered and self-referred clients.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients are placed in one of several individualized treatment tracks; generally a flexible outpatient or DUI program. Though requirements may vary for DUI clients, outpatient treatment consists of individual and group therapy with support for mild co-occurring disorders, like anxiety and depression. Twelve-step participation is not a requirement but clients who are interested are encouraged to attend off-site meetings. Staff consists of LCSWs and Master’s-level case managers.
Extras
Additional services include an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that includes individual, family and marital counseling as well as management training and case management services. The Second Time Around Program (STAP) is for grandparents who are raising children in lieu of their parents and includes case management, therapy and educational groups. The Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth is a family intervention program rooted in evidence-based practices. Geared towards families with kids ages 10 to 14, the program relies on a developmental model designed to steer children away from future problem behaviors. It also focuses on child-parent relationships and parenting skills. Therapy for couples and families, including counseling for divorce and marital conflict, is also offered.
Family and Community Service of Delaware County provides supportive housing for the homeless and transitional living, prevention and education for those living with HIV/AIDS.
In Summary
While the main outpatient program at Family and Community Service of Delaware County is relatively basic, treatment is evidence-based and flexible to fit a range of scheduling needs. The facility also offers a number of additional community-oriented services, making the program rather comprehensive and a valuable resource to those in the area.
