ACHCThe Basics

Appalachian Community Health Center (ACHC) offers an array of programs for adults and children seeking help with mental health or substance abuse issues. While ACHC’s alcohol and drug recovery program is not necessarily 12-step, clinicians encourage clients to seek out AA/NA meetings. Clients at ACHC can expect to receive both group and individual therapy. Incorporated in 1965, its four locations provide outpatient treatment services primarily in four West Virginia countiesBarbour, Randolph, Tucker and Upshur.

Treatment and Staff

All clients at ACHC start with an intake assessment that covers the client’s background and history of mental health and substance abuse issues as well as any past treatment. Following intake, the next step for clients is to make an appointment for group therapy. Attending approximately three group therapy sessions at the beginning of treatment is required. Staff members go over techniques for stress reduction and coping mechanisms for living sober, after which point clients move on to working with clinicians privately on individual issues. Psychiatric and psychological services are offered, as well as dual diagnosis, at this stage. All group and individual sessions are held with accredited Master’s-level therapists and the majority are also licensed social workers.

Children ages four and up are welcome at ACHC and can enjoy games and outdoor play. Parents have a choice between male and female therapists for their child to address chronic behavioral issues such as acting out in school.

Extras

ACHC accepts most insurance, with a $20 co-pay per session. Assistance based on a sliding fee scale is offered if an individual qualifies as indigent.

In Summary

For anyone living near one of Appalachian Community Health Center’s facilities and looking for outpatient treatment, look no further. ACHC has been offering quality care for 50 years and is a refreshingly earnest and community-centric program.
