The Basics
The Urban Life Wellness and Counseling Center, Inc. is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2003 by Thomas Johnson to provide substance abuse and behavioral health treatment and support services. Located in East Orange, New Jersey—just 15 minutes outside of Newark—Urban Life Wellness offers both a general outpatient and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to support those who require flexible treatment that allows them to maintain regular life and work schedules.
Treatment and Staff
Before being entered into either treatment track, clients are first evaluated and assessed to determine the best level of care to fit their needs and which forms of therapy staff should employ. An individualized treatment plan is developed, but is subject to change depending on the progress of each individual client.
Both the basic track and IOP have treatment plans that involve some combination of individual and group therapy and family therapy. All treatment utilizes CBT methodology and both tracks also frequently and randomly administer drug tests. Those enrolled in the IOP are required to attend at least six hours of treatment per week, while the regular outpatient program is anything less than six hours. Alternative forms of treatment are also offered throughout the course of the program. Clients may participate in both music and art therapy, relaxation skills, medication management, stress management, journal writing, relapse prevention, weekend planning and life stories. The 12-steps are also integrated into treatment with group sessions scheduled twice a week.
The staff at Urban Life Wellness consists of LPCs, CADCs, LISWs and psychologists.
Extras
In addition to the comprehensive substance abuse treatment program, Urban Life Wellness also offers treatment for a variety of other behavioral health problems as well as community resources. Marriage counseling, couples counseling, psychiatric evaluations, educational seminars and referrals are available to clients and the community.
