The Basics
Lummi Chemical Addiction and Recovery Education (CARE) has provided outpatient services to the members of the Lummi Nation for over 35 years. The Lummi are the third most-populous tribe in Washington State and have lived in Northwestern Washington and Southern British Columbia for centuries. Recognized for their commitment to education, the Lummi Nation also encourages their members to embrace modern technologies while honoring their tribal values.
Headquartered in Bellingham, the Lummi Nation also operates Se-Eye-Chen, a transitional care facility for youth.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment is offered at both the standard and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care. IOP clients attend group therapy three times a week and have individual therapy once a week. Standard outpatient clients attend group sessions once or twice a week and have one-on-one therapy as-needed. The duration of treatment is progress-based, depending on the needs of the client. CARE also works with the local drug court with these referrals given a treatment plan with frequency and duration of treatment dictated by the court.
CARE’s treatment team is comprised of addiction counselors with the CDP credential. Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT) are all used in therapy. Clients with co-occurring disorders can receive dual diagnosis support from the therapists in Lummi’s neighboring Behavioral Health building. Additionally, CARE incorporates activities from the White Bison curriculum, including on-site Healing Circles.
Extras
Clients of CARE can incorporate family therapy if their loved ones wish to participate. Aftercare consists of a relapse prevention group that meets twice a week. Clients can also choose to have maintenance sessions with their individual counselors either weekly or monthly. CARE also provides anger management classes, and the Lummi Health Center has a fitness center and medical services.
In Summary
For over three decades, the Lummi Chemical Addiction Recovery and Education program has offered members of the Lummi Nation outpatient care that features evidence-based treatment alongside culturally-sensitive peer support. Its flexible aftercare program and dual treatment tracks give clients an opportunity to receive responsive support and encouragement as they progress through recovery.
