The Basics
Established in 1988, The Shoulder is a CARF Accredited non-profit substance abuse treatment facility across the bay from Mobile in Spanish Fort, Alabama. The program offers outpatient treatment utilizing faith-based methods and evidence-based modalities to adult men and women on a four-acre campus. Treatment includes 12-step philosophies and pyscho-educational classes, as well as individual and group therapy.
Treatment and Staff
The first step in getting treatment at The Shoulder involves an in-depth assessment to determine the level of care that the client will need. The Shoulder also offers residential treatment on the same campus, but only for men. In order to be admitted to either of the programs at this facility incoming clientele must have already completed detox if they are in need of it, since it’s not a medical facility.
There is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offered that entails three evenings a week, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, for two and a half hours. These group therapy sessions are co-ed, and even though the facility can treat up to 30 clients in the outpatient program, the staff keeps the client to therapist ratio small so there is personal attention given during these sessions. Individual sessions are also offered but are scheduled separately from the group times, and around the client’s schedule.
The treatment utilizes different evidence based methods, like CBT, DBT, EMDR and Motivational Interviewing (MI) in addition to having clients attend AA meetings. There is a strong spiritual element to the program, but there are also holistic options, as the facility offers specialty therapeutic activities like equine therapy. The treatment plans are individualized, allowing the clients to take their time in the program. Typically clients attend outpatient treatment for three to four months and then step down to the aftercare program, which is once a week, and open to clients for as long as they would like to attend.
The staff at The Shoulder are Master’s-level therapists and addiction specialists LPCs, CADCs, and LCSWs.
Extras
There is a family program twice a month where clients and family members participate in educational lectures and group therapy sessions together.
In Summary
The Shoulder aims to reunite families and repair broken relationships in addition to helping their clients discover life after substance abuse. This program typically maintains a waiting list because of their positive results within the community, which is just about the best review a facility can get.
