The Basics
The Shoulder is a faith-based, not for profit, CARF Accredited residential treatment facility originally established in 1988. Located across the bay from Mobile in Spanish Fort, Alabama the residential program is only available to men 18 and older and offers individual and group therapy, introduction to the 12 steps and relapse prevention methods.
Accommodations and Food
The men’s residential facility is a two story brick home located on four acres and was newly remodeled in order to accommodate up to 40 clients in dorm-style bedrooms and five bathrooms. The bottom level has a kitchen with new appliances, a large dining room, living rooms and backyard area with gazebo and picnic tables. There is another building on the property with offices and classrooms where clients can have meetings and group sessions. There is an on site chef that prepares all the meals for the clients, and uses fresh and organic local ingredients.
Treatment and Staff
Every client receives in individualized treatment plan that is broken down into three phases, though there is opportunity for those who need some extra time to stay in the program past the third phase. Once the client acclimates to the house schedule of chores and meetings, they are expected to work and be a contributing member of society. There is no set amount of time that clients are expected to remain in treatment, though typically it’s around three months or so, and moving through each phase is up to the individual.
Every incoming client receives a thorough assessment and placement in the appropriate level of care. The Shoulder emphasizes that they aren’t a medical facility, though there are registered nurses on staff. Essentially this facility doesn’t offer medication management or detox services, and clients who need detox must go through that process prior to admission. The Shoulder offers co-ed outpatient programs as well on the same property as the residential facility.
The clients take part in several group therapy sessions, including daily AA meetings, per week and at least one individual session. The group sessions are kept fairly small and address issues like relapse prevention and coping skills. There are psychoeducational lectures and classes and spirituality classes. There are random drug screenings at the facility and HIV education and screenings. The large staff at The Shoulder includes nursing staff CADCs, LCSWs and LPCs.
Extras
The clients, while expected to work or volunteer during their stay, also participate in a lot of additional recreational and group outings and activities like bowling, softball tournaments, music nights, group dinners and movie nights. During the family visitation times the backyard is used for BBQ’s and family events.
There is also a twice-monthly family program where clients can partake in therapeutic and educational activities at the facility. Aftercare is offered for as long as the client needs it. There are also transportation services offered to local events and church services on a weekly basis.
In Summary
The Shoulder welcomes clients with open arm its program regardless of their histories. Once a client gets through with the initial stages of treatment they are offered a supportive program to carry them through the first steps of sobriety, and has created a supportive environment filled with like-minded and kind individuals.
