The Basics
Founded in 2015 just north of Atlantic City in Galloway, New Jersey by Robert Snyder, Jennifer Hansen and Terri Burns, Enlightened Solutions provides three levels of outpatient substance abuse care. All three founders are in long-term recovery. Snyder has been clean and sober for 13 years, while Hansen and Burns, have 20 and 19 years, respectively. Snyder is a Master’s-level CADC, Hansen is the founder of The Hansen Foundation, and Burns is the Director of Operations of The Hansen Foundation’s sober living homes Serenity House and Serenity Estates. Programs include outpatient, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). At Enlightened Solutions, a holistic approach is intertwined with comprehensive evidence-based practices and a 12-step protocol. Most recently, Enlightened Solutions moved into a rustic and local dwelling, which sits on 460 acres, and includes a koi pond and seven horses.
Treatment and Staff
While Enlightened Solutions does not offer detox, when necessary referrals are provided to a local medical facility, which also administers medication-assisted treatment (MAT), specifically Vivitrol. On a weekly basis, the PHP is six days a week, scheduled from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm Mondays through Saturdays, and the IOP is a nine-hour commitment. The basic outpatient track is three hours per week. The PHP consists of daily group and individual therapy, the IOP consists of three three-hour group sessions and one individual session, while the outpatient program includes one group session. The PHP asks for a 30-day commitment. Group topics include 12-steps, anger management, conflict resolution, role-playing, relapse prevention and crisis intervention. Clients participate in gender-specific groups, designed to make them share issues which they are not comfortable discussing in a co-ed atmosphere.
At Enlightened Solutions, an evidence-based protocol, including CBT, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) are incorporated during treatment. Traditional psychotherapy, or “talk” therapy is incorporated, and all programs focus on trauma and provide dual diagnosis support. All clients receive an initial psychiatric evaluation by a staff psychiatrist. Individuals with co-occurring disorders are treated and receive medication management sessions. After the second week, family constellation therapy is utilized.
The IOP is a step down from PHP, and the program length is between four and six weeks. At Enlightened Solutions, CBT, Living in Balance, MI and a 12-based approach are utilized during IOP. Group topics include trauma and co-occurring disorders. Some topics parallel those offered in PHP. Besides therapy, IOP clients participate in one hour of yoga, once a week. In the outpatient program, group therapy parallels topics in IOP. While some clients attend AA/NA meetings, those opting for non 12-step based alternatives, including SMART Recovery, Celebrate Recovery and Refuge Recovery are encouraged to attend those groups. Some clients attend Wharf Rats, a recovery support group comprised of deadheads, fans who love The Grateful Dead.
Besides Snyder who is the executive director of clinical services, staff includes a medical director who is a psychiatrist, a family constellation therapist, Master’s-level clinical director/CADC, CADC intern and a MFT.
Extras
Housing options are provided. Some PHP clients reside at Serenity Estates, a sober living house that works closely with Enlightened Solutions. Those clients also attend regular 12-step meetings, which is part of the sober living’s protocol. Others reside at home, or live at a local Oxford House.
Treatment also includes yoga, expressive arts, chiropractic services, acupuncture and The BodySound Chair which shuts down a client’s “fight or flight” response, and eases anxiety. Other holistic services include aikido, which is taught by an Akido Master, who is in the Japanese Hall of Fame.
During PHP, clients are provided with nutritious, organic lunches. The chef works closely with a nutritionist. Clients are provided with a variety of choices including grilled chicken, pasta salad and fruit salad. Sides include salads with fresh leafy greens, fresh veggies, and sweet potatoes. Coffee intake is limited, however clients are allowed to have one cup of freshly brewed coffee.
In Summary
At Enlightened Solutions, staff is passionate about recovery, and boast impressive credentials. Additionally, they are highly in tune with the needs of their clients, and care deeply about their wellbeing. Clients seeking comprehensive services, along with other bonuses, including a rustic locale, are sure to find themselves in excellent hands here.
