North Dakota Department of Human ServicesThe Basics

The North Dakota Department of Human Services provides outpatient and residential substance abuse treatment at its Lake Region Human Service Center Chemical Dependence Program in Devils Lake. Devils Lake is a small town in the northern half of the state that is home to the Lake Region State College and the North Dakota School for the Deaf. Lake Region began offering residential treatment in 1991.

Accommodations and Food

The average stay in the Lake Region residential program is six to eight weeks. The program houses men and women in separate wings, and all residents have roommates. The treatment community is relatively small in size, usually with fewer than 20 residents at a time. The facility has a TV room in which residents can recreate after their full day of treatment activities. There is a kitchen staff that prepares standard American fare for all meals, and dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

Residents participate in at least 20 hours of group and individual therapy each week. Most residents attend nine groups each week and are also asked to attend local 12-step meetings, to which Lake Region will provide transport.

The treatment team at Lake Region includes physicians, Master’s-level therapists including MSWs and LCSWs and addiction counselors. Groups usually have fewer than 12 participants and use The Matrix Model, with components of CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

The treatment team has extensive experience with co-occurring disorders and can provide clients needing dual diagnosis support with therapy and medication for their mental health diagnosis. After treatment hours, medical technicians and nursing staff are on site for supervision and support.

Extras

Treatment is available in American Sign Language. Lake Region schedules periodic outings to local churches and takes residents on fishing trips. After residents stabilize in their recovery, they can have family visits and may even be eligible for passes for overnight visits in the later stages of their stay. For aftercare, many residents choose to continue treatment in Lake Region’s outpatient program.

In Summary

For over 20 years, the North Dakotas Department of Human Services Lake Region Human Service Chemical Dependency Program has been providing residents of northern North Dakota with reliable evidence-based substance abuse treatment. By asking residents to attend community 12-step meetings and giving them the option of continuing in its outpatient program, Lake Region ensure that clients know residential treatment is only the first step in building a successful life in recovery.
