The Basics
The New Dawn Center is a gender-specific residential treatment facility for men located in Vale, South Dakota. The facility was founded by Laura Lamphere and Dorothy Giedd, two women seeking to meet the community’s need for residential treatment that surpassed regular 30-day programs. Lamphere and Giedd eventually incorporated New Dawn Enterprises in 1977 and opened their first facility in Sturgis. In 1984, New Dawn moved to their new location in Vale on an expansive campus.
Accommodations and Food
The New Dawn facility is situated on an 80-acre plot of land with two separate buildings on the property; one dedicated to housing and the other reserved for treatment and extracurricular activities. The housing building accommodates 24 men in 12 double-occupancy rooms. Each bedroom is furnished with two twin beds, storage space and closets for personal belongings. Linens and towels are provided but must be laundered by the resident. Multiple shared bathrooms are located in each wing.
Men also share a common living area with large couches and comfortable chairs. Residents may watch Cable TV and movies or choose from a large selection of books. The facility also has a gym with equipment for cardio and strength training. The dining room and kitchen are large with multiple refrigerators for storage. Clients help to prepare their own food in a family-style environment with meals typically decided upon by general consensus. There is an additional space in the administrative building dedicated to creative skill development including bike repair, woodworking and looms for making rugs.
Treatment and Staff
The substance abuse treatment program at New Dawn Center is a 90-day track for men. In order to be enrolled, clients must be thoroughly screened with a bio-psycho-social assessment and approved by a physician to enter the program. Clients diagnosed with moderate to severe co-occurring disorders may not be admitted as treatment is limited to low-intensity residential. If clients have medication, they are expected to bring enough of a supply for a full month. Additional psychological care can be arranged with local providers. No detox services are available on-site, so clients who require a medical detox are referred out. The facility and treatment practices are accredited with the South Dakota Division of Community Behavioral Health and the Department of Social Services.
Residents live and work on the property and attend five to eight hours of weekly group and individual therapy. Family therapy may also be included during these sessions. All sessions are facilitated by LADCs who utilize evidence-based practices. Each resident works with their primary counselor to develop an individualized treatment plan designed to meet their unique needs. The client’s ability to stay sober and progress through recovery is dependent on their dedication and active involvement, as such all clients are required to attend 12-step meetings or other support groups to supplement their treatment program. Clients are also required to work and contribute 30 percent of their income in exchange for room and board.
Extras
The facility offers employment opportunities so that clients can become productive members of society. Residents can seek either outside employment or work on-site making rugs. The workers are paid half of the profits of the rugs they make and then contribute 30 percent of their earnings as a way of paying for treatment.
NDC also has a program that provides bikes for disadvantaged children in the Vale community. Additionally, clients can improve their skills with arts and crafts in the woodworking department.
In Summary

All services are low-intensity and focus on providing residents with the opportunity to find recovery and become productive members of society. Residents attend treatment, meetings and work in order to recover from chemical dependency while developing relationships with fellows in recovery and skills to support a lifetime of sobriety.
