Smithville TexasThe Basics

The Last Resort is a men’s residential substance abuse treatment facility about an hour east of Austin in Smithville, Texas. This 12-step immersion program offers both evidence-based and holistic treatment methods, like equine therapy and yoga. The programs are available to adult men who are grappling with addiction and co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

The Last Resort campus in on 51 acres of land that includes a main treatment facility and four cabin-style residences. The cabins have a homey charm to accommodate the 30 clients in double occupancy bedrooms furnished quaintly with double beds and rocking chairs. There are kitchens and dining rooms in each residence, though there is a large dining hall located in the main facility with long, wooden tables and chairs. Antique furniture and pictures that remind one of old west nostalgia hang on the walls of every room, which you can look at when you’re not gazing upon the sunset near the facility pool, checking out the horses in the stable or watching the large screen mounted TV. Included on the grounds are a fitness center with free weights and machines, and a “sports court” which can handle several different styles of athleticism. There are of course always the walking paths and fishponds useful for quiet moments to reflect upon one’s day.

A major component of the programs success is nutrition, and The Last Resort provides three healthy and delicious meals a day that is prepared by the clients under the instruction of an on site chef. The meals are balanced and energizing, staying away from artificial flavors and provides clients with a proper diet in order to revitalize their bodies and minds.

Treatment and Staff

The Last Resort offers both 60 and 90-day program schedules of individualized treatment. The structured daily schedule involves and early morning wake up followed by meditation and facility chores. Several group therapy sessions, including process groups that are small in number, a large community session and an on-site AA meeting. There are 12-step meetings required six days a week, some off campus and some lead by alumni of the program. Exercise and yoga is incorporated into treatment schedules, as well as medication management services for clients with a dual diagnosis.

There are a variety of therapeutic options offers at The Last Resort that address many issues that male addicts experience. There are traditional methods, like Motivational Interviewing (MI), more holistic avenues like equine therapy, and then there are specialty programs called Men’s Work. This is a two-day intensive where clients participate in psychodrama exercises; drum circles and bioenergetics work. These treatments also cover sexual issues, family relationships and relapse prevention.

The staff offers impressive accreditations and extensive experience in the field of addiction, including Master’s-level LCSWs, LCDCs, a psychiatrist, LMFTs and a therapist that specializes in sexual addictions.

Extras

The staff works closely with their clients to design a personalized aftercare plan for each client and offers referrals and resources to sober living or Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP) treatment.
