The Basics
Founded in 2011 in the Seattle suburb of Auburn, Washington, Sober Solutions provides ten sober living homes throughout Pearce County. Its mission is to fulfill a demand for safe and structured sober living in Washington State, as well as to allow clients a chance to work on their recovery, before transitioning back into society.
Accommodations and Amenities
Sober Solutions accommodates 115 clients, spread out across ten properties, which are typically triplex or four-plex apartment buildings. The gender-specific complexes include two or three bedroom apartments, which include a washer, dryer, fully equipped kitchen, a dining room and living room. Each apartment holds between four and six residents. Clients are paired in double-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds with headboards, dressers, nightstands and hanging artwork.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. Amenities include cable TV, Wi-Fi and all utilities. Each house has a live-in residential manager.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients must have undergone detox, and pass a drug and alcohol screening. Some clients have completed primary care at a residential treatment facility. On a weekly basis, clients with less than 30 days of sobriety must attend five 12-step meetings, while those with more time sober must attend three meetings. At Sober Solutions, clients are encouraged to find a recovery support group that works best for them. This includes SMART Recovery, Celebrate Recovery or Refuge Recovery. Other clients prefer to participate in Bible studies or go to church. As long as residents are actively focused on a program of recovery, meeting choices are up to them.
At Sober Solutions, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse are not immediately evicted. Staff ensures that they have a safe destination to go to, after leaving the house. After an interim, those residents are admitted back on a case-by-case basis. Once accepted back, they undergo a 30-day blackout, and are hooked up with a “life buddy” or a peer who takes them to five weekly 12-step meetings. The peer also provides guidance and support to help them get back on the right track.
Residents are encouraged to enroll in school, work or attend an outpatient treatment program. During the first two weeks, the curfew is 8 pm. No visitors are allowed. After that time, the curfew is 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The 30-day cost is $500, but some clients receive temporary agency funding, until they get work and are able to pay their own rent. Residents are allowed use of the facility’s office computers, and staff provides academic, as well as vocational guidance.
Extras
Program director Kenneth Moultry, who is in recovery, is working on opening Housing 4 Hope, a sober living home for indigent clients.
