The Basics
Santa Maria Center for Change is an outpatient substance abuse treatment program in Santa Maria, California. As a subsidiary of Mental Health Systems, an expansive behavioral health organization since 1978, the facility works with clients sentenced through drug court; as well as parolees and those on probation, Prop 36 and CalWORKS. However, self-referred clients are also welcome.
Treatment and Staff
Due to the target clientele, treatment often focuses on changing criminal thinking as well as treating addiction. After initial assessments and evaluations, clients receive an individualized treatment plans that include individual, group and family therapy using evidence-based practices such as CBT and REBT with additional support for those struggling with co-occurring disorders. Regular drug testing, case management and crisis intervention services are available as needed. Depending on individual court stipulations, clients may be required to attend 12-step meetings.
Staff consists of CATCs, Master’s-level counselors and case managers.
Extras
Aftercare is available in the form of stepped down therapy sessions. Standalone therapy is also available. Additional services include vocational counseling, anger management classes, rape crisis support and referrals for sober living facilities in the area.

As one of Mental Health Systems’ many court-system centered programs, Santa Maria Center for Change is able to provide evidence-based treatment and educational groups, ancillary counseling for mental health and vocational support as well as case management services to all its clients. Though its curriculum is geared toward deterring of criminal activities as well as treating addiction, non-judicial system clients can find solid treatment here as well.
