Richmond KentuckyThe Basics

The Kentucky River Foothills Development Council was founded in 1962 to provide supportive services to the residents of central Kentucky. It operates the Liberty Place Recovery Center for Women, a transitional care program, in Richmond—a small city that’s home to Eastern Kentucky University.

Liberty Place can treat up to 108 women at a time, all of whom progress through its five phases of treatment in an average of six to nine months.

Accommodations and Food

Housing options change for each resident as she progresses through treatment. At first, residents are housed in the home-like treatment facility’s dormitory, where they can have up to five roommates. They then move into double-occupancy shared rooms. Eventually, residents can apply for the facility’s private apartments, where they live independently. All accommodations have traditional décor and common areas for recreation. The facility has an industrial kitchen where standard American fare is prepared by a kitchen staff and residents in later stages of treatment.

Treatment and Staff

The first phase of treatment is Safe Off the Streets (SOS). In this phase—which lasts approximately a week—residents work with the counseling staff to reveal their substance use and criminal justice history and acclimate to the program. In the next phase, Motivational Track One, clients walk to off-site life skills and psycho-education classes. The walking, or “trudging,” to class is designed to enhance their commitment to recovery. Clients also begin attending 12-step meetings in the community and working the 12 steps. In the next phase, Motivational Track Two, clients may begin to earn privileges in the facility for successful participation in the community. Clients continue to work the 12 steps.

In the final stages of treatment, called Phase One and Phase Two, clients move from the dormitory to apartments on the treatment site. They no longer “trudge,” and they begin working a group therapy curriculum. Clients are assigned jobs in the treatment community such as kitchen duty and gardening. Residents search for work outside of the treatment community and/or become peer mentors to those in earlier stages of recovery. Those with an income begin paying rent.

In the final stage of treatment, clients make a plan for independent living off-site which includes housing, employment and recovery activities. All women who complete the program are invited to return to the community should they need support in the future.

Treatment at Liberty Place uses CBT and the 12-step framework guided by the Recovery Dynamics curriculum. The treatment team includes LCSWs and CADCs who also provide individual therapy throughout treatment. Clients with co-occurring disorders are referred to a mental health clinic for additional therapy and medication.

Extras

In the final phase of treatment, residents can apply for passes to visit family overnight.
