The Basics
Humboldt County Health and Human Services (HCHHS) offers a variety of behavioral health, wellness and social services to the residents of northern California’s Humboldt County and the surrounding communities. Located in Eureka, clients have both the natural beauty of the Redwood Forest as well as the numerous resources a decent-sized city has to offer. The outpatient substance abuse treatment program offered by HCHHS is called the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) program and it is designed for adults only.
Treatment and Staff
AOD typically consists of two to four days in treatment per week depending on the individual client’s needs. Clients are initially assessed before starting the program in order to form an individualized treatment plan. This plan dictates how many days the client should spend in treatment, which group sessions to attend and whether additional care is needed prior to beginning the outpatient program. If residential treatment or detox services are required, the individual is referred to the appropriate facility. Otherwise, they are placed in one or more of the group sessions offered by HCHHS. The sessions include but are not limited to a Dad’s group, a women’s recovery group and a male-only Seeking Safety group. Supplemental therapeutic and educational offerings such as skill development and relapse prevention are also available.
HCHHS does not have individual therapy or dual diagnosis support at this time. The 12 steps are not integrated into the program, however clients may be referred to local AA/NA meetings upon request. The staff at HCHHS consists of psychologists, a psychiatrist, LMHCs, LPCs and LCDCs.
Extras
In addition to the comprehensive outpatient substance abuse treatment programs, HCHHS also offers prevention, some treatment and professional referrals for a variety of other behavioral health problems or other issues. Other services include children and adolescent public health services, social services, adult public health services, veteran services, geriatric public health services and community outreach services.
In Summary
The Alcohol and Other Drugs program offered by the Humboldt County Health and Human Services is an excellent program for those seeking a loosely structured outpatient program that is personalized to their recovery needs and implements issue-specific group sessions.
