Mesa ArizonaThe Basics

Founded in 2003 by Deborah Wallace in Mesa, Arizona, New Life Recovery provides co-ed sober living, as well as psycho-educational groups facilitated by Master’s-level social workers. In Arizona, the facility was a pioneer in providing recovery housing for couples, as well as individuals in recovery from addiction. Their mission is to provide an intimate environment so that clients can heal from the damage caused by chemical dependency, as well as foster new ways of living. New Life Recovery is deeply rooted in the 12 steps.

Accommodations and Amenities

New Life Recovery accommodates 12 clients inside a white Mediterranean-style house that features a wrap around covered porch with Grecian columns and rounded eaves. The house has a long paved driveway and a pristine lawn. The living room includes a cathedral ceiling with a working fireplace, and there are two bathrooms. The house typically lodges three females and three males. Couples share double-occupancy rooms, while single clients are paired in a double, or reside in singles. Rooms are comfortably furnished with beds, dressers and closets.

Clients are responsible for their own meals, which are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen, which includes three refrigerators. Amenities include laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, a small gym featuring weights, a swing set and cable TV. Laundry is done on Wednesday evenings. On a monthly basis, each resident contributes $15 towards the purchase of paper supplies. The house manager, who is in recovery, lives on the premises and oversees operations.

Rules and Regulations

New Life Recovery accepts clients who have completed detox or those with more sobriety time under their belt. A 90-day minimum length of stay is required, but clients are welcome to stay beyond that time. Requirements include attending 90 12-step meetings in 90 days, getting a sponsor and working the steps. Those on medication management for co-occurring disorders must maintain scheduled appointments with their psychiatrists. Other services besides housing, include case management, individual and family guidance, 12-step program referrals and job placement or career assistance.

Clients must attend the weekly Wednesday house meeting, which is facilitated by Wallace, who is a Master’s-level social worker. During the house meeting, groups are conducted, which teach residents recovery and relapse prevention skills, as well provide as substance addiction education. Group topics include conflict resolution, breathing exercises for anxiety relief and managing “high risk” situations. The groups also feature lectures, discussions and guest speakers.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, but the overall safety of the household is the main priority. Every month, the curfew extends a half hour. During the first month, the curfew is 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. After the first month, the curfew is 10:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 12:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

One bathroom features a large bathtub with Jacuzzi jets, as well as a steam room. At New Life Recovery, there is the belief that a holistic approach to treatment is crucial, and that the Jacuzzi, as well as the steam helps remove toxins caused by prolonged drinking and drugs.

New Life Recovery is hoping to obtain a 501 non-profit status in the near future. Clients’ fees, as well as various faith-based agencies help fund the facility. The Terros Families First Program pays the rent for financially challenged residents until they get jobs.

In Summary

New Life Recovery fulfills a demand for couples’ sober living, as well as for those seeking tranquil and safe housing, while they focus on their recovery. This home is luxurious and also highly affordable, and those with children are also allowed to have them spend overnights at the house. With Wallace at the helm, New Life Recovery is an oasis in the desert.
