Oahu HawaiiThe Basics

The Hawaii Counseling and Education Center was originally opened in 1985 and has since expanded from one location to a network of facilities in Kailua, Aiea and Haleiwa on Oahu. Additionally, two branches have been opened on the big island of Hawaii in Kamuela and Papa’aloa. HCEC provides outpatient clinical treatment for mental health disorders as well as substance abuse and domestic violence. In addition to treatment, HCEC offers workshops and training and holds contracts with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, State and County Judiciary systems and Hawaii State Departments of Education, Health and Public Safety.

The substance abuse treatment program is known as “Ke Ala La’I” (meaning “Pathway to Serenity”) and aims to help clients begin their journey towards overall wellness and peace of mind.

Treatment and Staff

HCEC endorses the belief that all people have the ability to naturally heal and live their lives to the fullest; as such, treatment programs incorporate natural and holistic healing methods into the therapeutic approach. Both the mental health programs and the substance abuse programs at HCEC use evidence-based practices to teach clients the science behind addiction and mental disorders and how to identify defective thinking patterns and negative behavioral responses. Counselors use CBT and DBT techniques as well as behavioral modification.

Pathway to Serenity is an outpatient substance abuse program created to help chemically dependent adults and adolescents. Each client participates in an individualized treatment plan that is tailored to their needs. Treatment is typically a three- to six-month program that is completely dependent on the client’s comfort level and their personal progress. Participation is dependent upon staff recommendations; some clients may attend on a daily basis and others may only attend once per week. The facility does not offer detox but does include dual diagnosis support through medication management and additional assessments.

All clients attend individual therapy sessions as well as some group therapy sessions with fellow substance abuse program clients and many are encouraged to attend 12-step support meetings to supplement their recovery. Part of the therapeutic process includes homework assignments, audio recordings and videos.

All clients must remain abstinent for the duration of the treatment process, committed to change and compliant with staff recommendations—all essential components to the growth and change required to recover. Therapeutic activities are facilitated by LMFTs, CSACs and Psychologists who have extensive experience working with individuals struggling with substance abuse.

Extras

Another essential aspect of recovery at HCEC is the involvement of the family unit. In addition to therapy, clients and their family members are encouraged to have frequent sessions with their primary therapist.

Outside of therapy, HCEC also facilitates wellness workshops and seminars for individuals in recovery and those who work in the recovery field. Additional programs are also available for clients struggling with domestic violence or other forms of trauma.

In Summary

The Hawaii Counseling and Education Center offers outpatient substance abuse treatment program known as Pathway to Serenity. Treatment is available for both adults and adolescents and emphasizes each individual’s innate ability to grow and heal from active addiction. Using evidence based and holistic methods, clients work a three- to six-month program of recovery while developing coping skills, awareness and the mental tools to modify their patterns. All treatment is overseen by a credentialed and knowledgeable clinical staff. Programs and treatment methods are culturally-sensitive and respect all belief systems.
