The Basics
The Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee (HANAC) was founded in Queens, New York in 1972 to provide social and behavioral health services to the homeless and vulnerable Greek populations in and around New York City. Over time, it has grown into one of the largest social services organizations in New York City. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the substance abuse treatment program at HANAC provides medically supervised treatment services including outpatient care to clients of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment provided by HANAC are available for self-referrals as well as for those who are court-ordered or referred.
The outpatient substance abuse treatment program at HANAC begins with an initial evaluation and assessment to determine the level of care needed and to help counselors develop an individualized treatment plan for the client. Once a plan is tailored for their individual needs, treatment modalities, frequency and duration of care are determined. All of this is subject to change depending on the progress of the client throughout the program as monitored by case managers.
The program operates from Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 7 pm and on Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm. Treatment plans consist of a combination of group and individual therapy, family therapy, addiction education, relapse prevention and aftercare planning. The 12 steps are not integrated into the program, but clients are encouraged to attend meetings outside of treatment.
Group sessions are held at various times throughout the day as are education seminars and relapse prevention. The other treatment services are scheduled independently between the client and their counselor.
The staff at HANAC consists of LCSWs, CADCs and LMFTs.
Extras
In addition to the comprehensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program, HANAC also offers a variety of other services for clients and the broader community. Affordable housing, counseling services, senior programs, employment and education programs, weatherization programs, legal immigration services and youth programs are all available for enrollment.
In Summary
The substance abuse treatment program offered by HANAC is best suited for individuals who are seeking flexible outpatient treatment that caters to the client’s schedule. Through a variety of group topics and individualized treatment plans, clients are ensured a solid foundation for recovery.
